Pass switch on Z1?? was created by 79MKII
Can anyone tell me what the function of the "Pass" switch is on the 900's? I'm converting some 900 switches to my '79 1000 and I'm trying to figure everything out.
Thanks

Am believing the UK Z1's had an operative "PASS" switch that flashed the bright headlight.

And where a "PASS" switch existed on US Z1's it is inoperative.

Do know that original US model 1973Z1 did not have a PASS" switch, only a single horn button.

In the above picture, the "PASS" is printed in yellow, so am thinking it would be operative for a UK model.

The colorless "PASS" impression on US models is meaningless. :)

MY 79 1000 has the non colored "pass" on the switch, but with the single horn button. This switch seems to function but I can't trace what wires its switching :S This actually plugs right into my harness but I don't think it will work properly. My plan is to figure out all of the functions and wire it with indidivual connectors as needed. It's way out there, but I'd love to make it function as the Hazard switch. I just can't figure out what that Pass switch does?? I was thinking that it probably was connected to the brights, but it doesn't seem to switch the corresponding wires.

The original Z1 horn button was just a small round button with "H" imprinted above it, and no PASS imprint.

Believe most riders on US models just click the top mounted bright-dim switch back and forth to "flash" the headlight.

Just guessing, but maybe the operative UK model PASS switch function temporarily turns on the high beam while leaving the low beam also burning (both beams simultaneously lit). Perhaps a second high beam power wire could be routed through the PASS switch as an alternative hign beam power source activated upon pressing the PASS switch. If already on high beam, nothing would happen when pressing PASS.

Rooting for you and anxious to hear the results. :)

I see that Jeff sells this exact switch. Too bad he hasn't chimed in. I think I have the "Pass" part figured out, but now converting it to the newer style bike is the challenge.

What is the "PO" for in the middle of the on/off?? This is throwing me for a loop when trying to map out the connections. I now realize that the 900's only had one power supply (main 20A fuse) and that is going to take some figuring to match up to my 3 circuit style system (20A, 10A, 10A).

PO = Parking Only and if I remember correctly turned on the turn signal lights on my 73's. Can't remember if the 74 or 75 Z1's I had included that feature. Might have been a first year only thing and my memory sucks...

In the U.S. model 1973 Z1 (from factory, as per KHI FSM and original Owner's Manual) PO and ON positions do the same thing -- turn on both headlight and taillight. Some owners wire PO to turn on tail light and/or front blinkers (without blinking) as "parking lights" without the headlight.

European model headlight switch PO position turns on the tail light and "city light" (a small 4 watt lamp inside the headlamp for riding at dusk or where legally required for city driving after dark). So maybe the PO is also short for Polite.

KHI FSM's from 1973Z1 though 1979KZ1000's do not answer the question. Nor does Chilton's 1973-74 Z1 Repair book.

The 1976KZ900LTD headlight switch markings and functions are same as the Z1 (but without the Z1's throttle tension screw).

Believe the PO city light position may have at some point been removed from the US model headlight switch assembly.

And here's some headlight trivia -- Although the headlamp on the Z1 varied between countries, the shell stayed the same satin black finished item with one large wiring hole in the rear and a small hole on top plugged with a rubber bung (for the speed warning light on the Z2-750 model and high beam warning light on the H2-750 triple). :)

You could always hook it up to a nitrous solenoid.
Just hit it and PASS.:P

Believe only the original 1973Z1 came equiped with a friction throttle adjustment screw which was discontinued in 1974. Otherwise, the 1973 and 1974 Z1's had same switchgear on both sides.

1975Z1 began the horn/flasher rocker switch design with HORN and PASS imprinted above the rocker, with PASS function being operative only on UK models.

1976KZ900 continued basically same switchgear design (with slight cosmetic changes I can't remember exactly, but might be just changing imprint over the starter button from S to START.) :)
