Stator cover

Guys, It's gonna be financially 6 months or more before I can start fixing my bike. But in the mean time I don't want it to just "sit". I want to be able to start and warm it up once a week or so. Problem is (see pic) the shattered cover! I realize that the cover holds the center thingy in place. It feels loose, is it just held in place by magnatisim now? Can I unplug it and just pull it out so I can at least run it? I know it will not charge, thats ok (battery tender) Other than another cover, can this be done? Thanks... John

Magnetism and wires are all that are holding it.

You can run it if you pull it out, but I would recommend removing the remains of the cover and cleaning out all the bits of broken metal and pebbles etc. before starting it.

Inspect the stator (center thingy) for broken wires or scuffed varnish insulation. If any of the wire areas looks scratched, you probably want to look for a new stator.

Also, check the magnetic flywheel. Scratches are ok, but get all of the metal filings out using masking tape. The main concern is that it should have no wobble to it at all. If it has the slightest wobble, it is now a refrigerator magnet. To pull it off you need to remove the center bolt. Then notice there is a much larger set of threads in the center of the hub. Just screw in a big bolt into the hub and the rotor should come off. The bolt is usually the same as the big bolt on the upper steering clamp, or sometimes it's the same as an axle bolt.

That's the first time the stators seen daylight in 27 years! Hopefully everthing inside is ok, Thanks guys!!

Pulled remains of cover off (one broken bolt) stator popped right out looks fine. Bike started right up, sounds great and flywheel spins true! Thenks guys!!

If it were me, I probably would have been out there tearing into my bike before the first dose of pain meds the Doc gave me had worn off! :woohoo: :whistle: :laugh:

Well, emotionally for the first couple weeks I could not go out and see the old gal. But know I NEED to start getting her fixed back up. She's been an awsome bike, NEVER in 27 years has she left me stranded! She deserves it for sure!
