Starter Question was created by gaillarry
My 84 GPZ750 has been getting hard to start lately, the starter seems to skip a lot and not catching. I removed it and tested it in a vice and it spins great. BUT the gear on the end of the starter moves in both directions (using pliers). I thought the starter gear would only move one way??

the stater clutch is inside the engine, and at the minimum is sounds like the rollers and springs are bad, but would not be suprised if the housing was broken. it will require you to drop the oil pan and pull some of the trans apart. not a terrible job, but not alot of fun.

I was hoping it was just the starter! I've read the archives and the engine has to come out and I can change the starter clutch from the oil pan. I won't order parts until I get into the engine. I guess this is my weeks project.

I have replaced the starter clutch in my 750 with the engine in the bike. Other than being close to the ground, it wasn't that difficult. If I had a bike ramp, it would be slick. Though I hope I never have the opportunity to do it again!
I included a link from before in regards to the starter clutch.
Good luck.

As you can see in the pic the frame is blocking removal of the oil pan. I have no choice but to pull the engine.

I didn't realize the frames on the GPZ's blocked access to the underside. That is a pain...
Sorry to hear about that...good luck.
