KZ750 H - loose starter button was created by psychbiker
As I have posted before, I have been having trouble with my turn signals choosing when to work. I recently replaced the battery which seemed to help for awhile, but we're back to intermittent success.
After the ride home, I noticed that the starter button literally is loose. It had slid out to a 45 degree angle. I tried repositioning it and it doesn't seem in any danger of popping out. However, during the wiggle and jiggle, voila, the turn signals returned!
I've checked Clymers and there doesn't seem to be any method of repairing the button/switch.
Questions: Can the switch assembly be repaired?
How difficult (expensive) is it to just replace the entire kill switch/starter button assembly?

I'll check on the button housing tomorrow after work.
What's involved if the starter button has "crumbled"?
Re the turn signals, this all began back when I put the bike back in service after the winter. At that time, I cleaned all connections, replaced most of the bulbs, and followed another's recommendation and swapped out the relays for the transistorized variety. As I said, when I was able to replace the battery (about two months ago), the turn signals worked fine until about two weeks ago.
Bottom line -- every time I fix one thing, two other problems are revealed!

removing/replacing the button isnt that big a deal you will figure it out once you get inside.the contact tip will sometimes wear down on these or they just get dirty.there is a small spring also it could be broken.

The button is a piece of plastic with a metal stud embedded in the back. The stud is what makes contact with a plate completing a circuit path for voltage to get to the solenoid to trigger it. There is a spring between the button and contact plate which fits over the stud. If the button flops around, it is either broken or the spring is compressed from fatigue. Open the switchgear housing (two 5mm phillips screws) and replace the button and spring. These parts are available from
www.z1enterprises.com
- you may have to call and ask if you don't see them listed. The button is the same part on a KZ900 with the button for the horn but other models may not have the button used for the horn.
Can't imagine how the start button is related to the turn signal problem. The voltage for the start button is switched coming from the ignition switch via the kill switch and then to/through the starter button to the solenoid. The power for the turn signals is part of the fused brown wire sub-circuit and that sub-circuit is split from the blue sub-circuit in the wiring bundle coming off your kill switch separately.
If you have replaced the bulbs in your turn signals, the wattage rating on these bulbs WILL be different than the OEM bulbs... Stanley bulbs that didn't adhere to SAE standard. While the new bulbs fit, they don't work well with an OEM flasher relay. Go to the autoparts store and pick up a HEAVY DUTY two post relay. It will plug right in and the HEAVY DUTY unit accomodates a much wider range of bulb wattages. Then trace the turn signal wiring back from each flasher to where it connects and check the ground. The ground wire is the black/yellow wire. On the back, they will probably plug into the main frame ground circuit via a small sub-harness made for the turn signals and rear brake light. On the front, the ground will likely come off the bulb holder or the large metal grommet inside the headlight shell. The grounds will probably plug into the main harness via connectors. Make sure all grounds are clean and secure.

Well, the kill switch itself is kinda loose in the housing (wiggles alittle).
Do I understand you correctly that a heavy duty flash relay and a transistorized relay are not the the same animal? (I replaced the relays that came with the bike -- not sure they were OEM.)
Guess I'll be spending sometime following wires this weekend!

It finally happened ...
Fortunately, I found the button immediately and carefully placed it and the spring in a ziplock bag so I wouldn't lose it before a replacement was obtained.
Unfortunately, best laid plans fell apart as the bag (shoved deep in my jacket pocket under my house keys) jumped out somewhere between here and work.
Neither the local repair shop nor Kawa dealer have any idea where to get a replacement. (I did find a web site of a guy who apparently makes them from scratch!)
But is there anyway to jury-rig the starter in the interim?
The repair shop suggested poking a pencil in the hole, which seemed stupid on its face as doesn't the button close the starter circuit? Can't imagine how a pencil would accomplish that!
PS - Turn signals still working on their own schedule.

I just noticed that they have a $35 minimum order, though.
