kawasakiman, if the speedo drive is on the left as they are on all Kawasakis, the cable spins counterclockwise... I mentioned putting the cable is REVERSE. I don't think that spinning the drill normally would hurt the speedometer. I had a customer install the forks backwards so the calipers would sit to the rear, like on a modern bike (he liked the look) and the customer couldn't figure out why his speedometer ran backwards... the needle actually went backwards and pegged and the odometer ran backwards as I recall... it was installed on the right side with the forks reversed. When I put the forks on correctly and the speedo drive went back on the left, the speedo ran normally as I recall.

the gears in the speedo are broke and it is mechanical. Is there anything ya'll can think of.

I say repair or fabricate! Epoxy via elastic reservoir molding or in a pinch, epoxy reconstruction does a beautiful and resilient job. It's easily done if you have some time and patience and you'll have the basic principles for making rings, loaded dice, obscene paperweights, etc in the process.

This is a basic walkthrough of the principles you'd use in epoxy fabrication. If you just want to reconstruct, clean your pieces very well, do a light 120 sand on the piece, build it up with epoxy and shape it back to where it needs to be. I wouldn't depend on it forever (well, I might but that's just me) but it would be a quick fix and about as cheap as you could get.

Have you considered using the excuse to pull all the gauges and upgrade to digital ? You'd probably opt for new magnetic sending units. The price may be prohibitive but done right, it'd sure look snappy.

id like to do my own research but i just dont know where to look. I dont know that much about bikes so this website is my learning site. As far as i can see I can use that guage cluster. I know realize that my speedo cable is gone. Sooooo, I dont know I guess if that guage cluster doesnt get to high in price than ill get just in case, either way it looks like its in perfect condition.

then that is a easy fix.
buy the one off e-bay if you feel a need for a backup.
but i would just order a cable from z1.
far and few between to have the speedo gears go, but it does happen.

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.
