Bad Points? was created by onuLine57
I have been having trouble with my points if I ride for about 45 min the bike starts to loose power like 2 of the cylinders are cutting out. I take off the points cover and the points have a white film on them. If I clean them the bike runs fine untill they get dirty again. Does anyone have any ideas on the cause of this?

what kinda coils are you running on the bike, stock or aftermarket? when i put a set of dyna coils on my bone stock 74 z1 900, they did the same thing your talking about. From my understanding and i could be completely wrong, but the points are burning up and getting pitted. I put a light coat and i mean light of 10w40 oil on them and have ridden 3500 trouble free miles.

It had accel on it and it would only run for like 15 min. I put on the stock coild it came with and now it goes for 45 or so until it happens. The points are the sudco ones not the stock ones. Could they just be a bad set?

maybe ill try the oil thing tomorrow.

Each set of points has a capacitor (condenser) across it to reduce the arcing and therefore reducing the pitting of the point's contact surfaces. If one of the capacitors has failed in the open-circuit mode then you have no anti-pitting protection and the associated points will deteriorate very quickly.

Use your multimeter on the Ohms scale... if there is a short circuit it should display open circuit or Over Load. Best of success.

anyone else have any ideas or should i just replace the condenser like bill_wilcox100 said? I dont want to if i dont have to because the points and condensers are only 3 weeks old and i just bought them from z1. They were the sudco ones and are cheaper than the other set they sell because those were sold out so did i just get a bad set?

i recently bought an old kz650 and luckily for me a guy i work with used to be a certified repair tech for honda and he told me to use 600 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the contact ring until its clean and use dialectric grease and ill never have a problem again.
