HI Guys,
Can anyone tell me how much variation in voltage the voltage reg allows? I have been checking a few things on the logs that I take while riding ( with a palm pda ) and noticed that voltage goes as high as 17.5 volts at high rpm. Is this normal??

That's too high. Here's how to test voltage regulator: Check battery voltage with engine off - must be at least 12v to continue. Unplug 9 pin connector in headlight shell and turn off or unplug any lights. Hook v meter up across battery and start engine. Bring RPM up to 1600; voltage should be between 14 - 15v. Without letting RPM's drop, gradually bring RPM's up to 4000; voltage should stay between 14 - 15v. Voltage should exceed 15v at any RPM. Ed

If you have an instantaneous voltage log, 17.5 is not out of the question. The average voltage, (which is what meters read) should peak around 14.5, but I found the instantaneous voltage can easily spike to over 16v.
