Interesting Find RE: Points was created by paulie
I wanted to start going over the ignition system on my bike to make sure its in decent shape. I open the points cover, and find some interesting things.

1.)The manual refers to a "pry plate" to adjust timing. I dont have one.

2.)Also, the manual states that as you turn the crankshaft with a socket, the points should be opening/closing as it goes around. I can go 360 with my crank, and the points don't move a millimeter.

Any thoughts? These threw me for a loop. I'm a TOTAL noob when it comes to bikes, though. So please be gentle. I have Dyna coils, so perhaps some mods have been done by the PO? Dyna ignition? How do you guys think I should proceed?

Thanks,
Paulie

Take a picture and post it here in the forum.

Since you are a TOTAL noob, what you are looking at might not be points.

The missing "pry plate" is a clue that maybe other things, i.e. points, are no longer part of your ignition equation.

If the bike is running right now, leave it alone, until you and we are sure of what you are dealing with.

The wiring diagram shows the F1 uses points stock.

My points plate does not have the pry points either.

Some points plates have the points on their own small plates that are individully adjustable. This pic shows that type. Loosen the two screws (circled) and use the pry points (arrow) to adjust. The points are mounted on smaller plates which are fastened by the two screws below the ones circled:

This is what my points plate, without the smaller plates looks like:

And a Kawi electroinc Ign. without points:

Paulie, as you mught remember I also own a '80 F1. Mine does have a pry plate. Make sure you are under the right hand cover (2 screws) as sitting on the bike. I use a Dyna S now but here is a pic of my previous point system.

Yea,yea, you guys sooo funny!:woohoo: Actually, the rubber grommet for the wires fell apart so I used some silicon to secure them. I used the tape to keep it even with the edge till it set up.
