Need Rectifier/Regulator for 85 ZN700Ltd- Help figuring out alternative? was created by ZN700LTD
Hi all,
I need a rectifier/regulator for the 85 Kawasaki ZN700LTD I picked up a couple of weeks ago. The Kawasaki part no is 21066-1055.
I don't want to spend money for a brand new one if I don't have to because the wiring going in and out of the R&R looks bad too, so I'm guessing more (many) parts will need replacing.
I was bidding on one on e-bay and had to pay attention to my job (hate it when that happens!) right when the auction was ending so someone else got it for 50 cents over my bid. While I wouldn't be surprised to see it for sale at a higher price soon, I really need one now.
Any one have an extra, or can look up for me what alternative RR's I can get that would work?
Thanks a lot!

First, I am not real sure what a "ZN" bike is. I suspect that there are probably lots of other models that can donate an R&R. Get someone with the zedder.com parts cross reference software to run the part number. That is, look it up and ask for someone with the software to run the part number and let you know what year/model bikes have the same R&R and it will make you eBay efforts easier. The next thing to do is use a sniper service on eBay.
www.auctionsniper.com
is the one I use. Put an amount in that you are willing to spend and it will bid right a the end of the auction so you don't need to be on hand. You may miss winning if you don't bid high enough but someone else won't jump in and trump you for $.50 again... unless they just had a higher max bid to begin with.

Thanks WG.
The bike is an 85 Kawasaki ZN700LTD.
According to some of the other experts on the site, it's a KZ650 engine, bored out and dropped into a cruiser style body. They were only available in 84 and 85 and a lot of the parts were one of's. I think the other designation is ZN700 A1 or A2 (mine's an A2).
And thanks for the sniper info, I didn't know that was possible.

I have the zedder s/w but it no longer runs since I quote upgraded unquote to XP. Steve Zedder has worked with me but it still bombs and why it won't run is a mystery. Post the P/N of you r/r and someone can run it for you... lots of folks have this software. I guess I haven't hear of a ZN bike but I deal mostly in older ones and Vulcan VN and of course, I have a Voyager (ZG). I bet every bike made in the 80s with an integrated r/r has the same unit... you just don't want to buy one with different wires where it won't plug in! Good luck...
BTW: I pay pretty much fixed priced for used carbs off ebay and bid on many sets. I bid low and only win about 1 in 10 auctions and use a sniper service so I can place my max bid without driving up the prices on the auction prior to its close.

Isn't the ZN the Zephyr, 700 cc shaft drive?
I imagine there's a boatload of other reg/recs that will work. How many wires going to the alternator, two or three?
It would help if you would post a picture of the reg/rec.

OK, I got to the regulator (had to take the gas tank off:angry:) but really wonder if it's what is supposed to be in there.
The brand seems to be "Shindengen" and the label also says "12V Regulator Rectifier SH555-12 4.5"
The Kawasaki part no is 21066 and this part doesn't have that number anywhere.
The stator has 3 wires coming out of it.

It won't have the Kawasaki part number on it.
Three wires from the alternator usually means it's a three phase alternator (most since 79 are), you should be able to adapt just about any three phase reg/rec although some will be easier than others.
Take a look at the parts diagrams on buykawasaki.com and see if the 83-85 GPz750 uses the same reg/rec part number, I might have an extra one of those.

Steell,
The only Gpz750 BuyKawasaki.com shows is an 82 KZ750-R1.
The part number for that Regulator is 21066-1027, and it shows that the wiring is part of the unit with one bundle of 5(?) wires coming of it and right next t othe bundle a single wire.
The part number shown for the ZN700Ltd is 21066-1055 and doesn't show any wiring as part of the unit. It looks like the wires plug into a 6 pin(flat pins) connector on one side of the regulator.
THat's all I can tell right now. My service manual doesn't actually show a picture of it.
I'll try to get a picture of the one I took out tomorrow.

Apparently the part number for the 85 ZN700 reg/rec has been superceded;
Part Number: 21066-1101
Description: REGULATOR-VOLTAGE
Source: KAWASAKI
Price: $94.53
While the part number for the 83 GPz is below (and it cost a little more):
Part Number: 21066-1038
Description: REGULATOR-VOLTAGE
Source: KAWASAKI
Price: $119.39
The above info is from www.ronayers.com/index.cfm
You may be able to find it cheaper at Old Bike Barn, Bike Bandit, or Z1 Enterprises (Jeff Saunders, a member here), Jeff is usually the cheapest.

VN750 Vulcan 86-93
Vn1500 Vulcan 87-93

as well as a few others, but there's some pretty popular ones.
