I have spent the winter painting and polishing my 550 LTD F-1 and believe I have touched nothing electrical. The bike ran fine in the fall. The problem is that there is power to the fuses with the ignition off, but when I turn the key I lose power to the fuses (using a test light). I have checked everything and nothing appears to be disconnected or shorting. Any ideas?

power to fuses with the key off?? something aint right there, you should have no power with key off, did you have the key switch out during the clean up?

The main fuse, (and the accessory fuses) get power all the time from the battery. The other two fuses are for lights. They only get power when the key is on.

How are you hooking up the test light?
1981 KZ550 D1 gpz.

I was thinking no power to fuses while in the off, my bad

Thanks for the replies. I am using a test light hooked to the negative battery post and the other end to the fuse. When I turn on the key I have no power anywhere.

that makes no sense,you should have power through the main fuse that powers ignition switch.from there it is split to differant areas of bike which are affected by switch being on/off;)

Umm, dumb question, is the battery charged? If the battery is pretty much dead you might have enough power to light the test light, until you turn the key on and power goes to the ignition coils taking what little is left from the battery. Just a thought :)

Actually, I recharged my battery from dead, it did'nt hold a charge first time and I noticed the acid level was low so I filled with distilled water and recharged, assuming that the battery was now charged. I will try my neighbours booster battery and possibly that is my problem. I will let you all know this weekend. Thanks!!!

It could be what AR15Ron said (which is most likely), or it can be a bad connection somewhere between the battery (+) and the main fuse. Many times it's the actual battery connection.
