ignition problem was created by james_kraska
Hey all, I havn't posted in a long time, but I was wondering if you guys/gals could help me figure out this problem I've been having...

I've recently lost a significant amount of power in my engine -which assuredly has nothing to do w/ carburation. It's an ignition problem, -essentially misses up to ~6k rpm, plugs are gapped correctly and new wires, so I figure there are only three parts left on the bike, the R&R, the spark units, and the coils. my shops manual says to do a "thre point test" on the coils, but does not tell me how to do it. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this out / offer any other opinions??

Thanks!

James

edit: My battery is staying nice and charged, and never receives more than ~14v, so I think the R&R is out too.

umm.. not my kz - that thing never breaks. Its my 1982 honda cb 650 custom - the thing that constantly breaks down. I can't seem to get any info on it anywhere else and the dedicated forum died about a year ago. Can anyone help? I'd realy apreciate it. I found the manual @ " cosky1.tripod.com/ " a scanned honda service manual.

Thanks again.

I do know these bikes had a chargeing problem, well not a problem but from factory only charge over 2500rpm or something. Thats if it the sohc 650. Look on google for some stuff on the night hawk 650 mabye. I was looking into getting one of these and found quite a bit of reading on the subject of its electrics.

Thanks already for the input guys! I wish every forum was this well maintained and had such a broad and friendly user base. Seems like every other site I try and go to - especially for newer bikes, people are only interested in starting flame wars and stuff. No help for a college kid to just get out and go riding!

Thanks again!

I worked on a 84 I think shadow, the stator was bad on it, there is a test you can run to figure out what it is, I do remember the guy I got the parts from saying it was a VERY common problem on those bikes

I'm not sure if your 650 C has the same ignition as the 750/900 CB's, but if it does, you can replace the coils and ignitors for about $70. I just finished designing this:
www.geocities.com/loudgpz/CBheiModCavCoil.html

I haven't installed it on a bike myself, but some guys on that CB forum reported it works.

Here's a design using stock coils:
www.geocities.com/loudgpz/CBheiMod.html

I don't remember anyone trying the version with the stock coils.
