New Dyna 3 ohm Mini Coils... was created by savedrider
Just came across these at Z1E
www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=2069
I was doing some research and found some more info on them at Dynatek's site www.dynaonline.com/english/cruiser_coils.htm#system
Notice on Dynatek's site the requirement note at the bottom regarding not for use with Dyna-S type ignitions. I was considering using them instead of the Dyna greens, but it looks like they are not compatible with the Dyna S.
Anyone have any input?
Thanks

My guess is that they won't handle the heat that the Dyna S and III produce in the coils. Those ignitions have very long dwell angles...almost twice that of the stock KZ ignitions. More importantly, the duty cycle approches 100% which means the coils get no breaks to cool down. Larger coils dissipate heat better.
Smaller coils will probably get no advantage from the extended dwell on those ignitions anyway, and they will just cook.

It's possible to get the same power through a smaller coil using modern core materials. Loudhvx is correct on the heat dissipation though. It's pretty mch proportional to surfce area. They would probably be OK with a CDI or late model multispark ignitor but anything that offers a constant DC path through the primary is going to cook them.

I think you folks may have nailed it. It's a heat issue. Since the smaller coils are most likely designed for drag racing applications they are only subject to use from one pass at a time. Whereas on a normal street bike they see constant use from a few minutes to hours at a time. I guess it's different with a next generation ignition though.
Anyhow, looks like I'm gonna stick with the greens I just received for Christmas, but those small ones sure did look mighty tasty! And only $5 more.

Newer (and more expensive) aftermarket ignitions only supply enough dwell to saturate the coil. Once the coil is saturated, any further dwell is just wasted as heat without any additional spark energy.
The charging rate is about the same as 3 ohm accel coils.

One of the good things about the smaller coils is that you can mount them anywhere you want. I would put them down by the battery box and they would get plenty of air and be away from the heat.

I'll talk with Dynatek and get an answer to this. I too suspect it's heat related, but I would like to know the facts.

Jeff,
Did you ever get the story from dynatek on these coils? I need a new pair and see that you still carry these. Are they OK to run on the street? I'm running an MSD ignition, BTW.
Has anyone tried these coils yet?
Thanks
