Starter motor gone dead. was created by Shoey949
I had an interesting issue last night. I was riding home from a friends house, picked some things up and then went to get gas and my the starter wouldn't turn over, just the click of the solenoid. I had starter the bike fine no more then ten minutes earlier. I have never had any trouble with my starter, no wierd noises, no sign of a short. So I checked the solenoid and when I press the starter button I am getting 11.5 volts to the lead at the starter. The wierd thing is I am getting 2.5 volts to that lead when just the key is turned. I took the motor apart and everything visually looks good and all the internal resistances of the motor have checked out.
Any ideas what this could be?

Also I just noticed that the starter is very hard to turn over by hand. I'm not sure if that is how it inherently is or something is wrong.

As a quick update on my own problem..three of the brushes in my motor were smashed up, with two of them being ripped off the wires altogether. The barrel (armiture?) itself is concave, which is a pain in the ass..does that mean I can't get replacement brushes from Z1E? I need a whole new motor...? Now that I've removed the broken brushes and cleaned out the (loads!) of carbon, I can at least turn the shaft..which is a step in the right direction, I guess..
I really just want to ride my freakin' bike..I wish I had a kickstart on this thing now..it's a bitch to bump-start.
When I find my camera, I'll post a couple of pics.

Pics:
This one bothers me the most..is it too concave to work with new brushes, or can I replace the brushes, and get back to riding?? Do there need to be cuts in the surface of the barrel, or is the smooth/brassy surface okay?
