Andrew coils

I just got me a pair of andrew coils for $36.00 off eGADS.
And dont get mad how do I make shure they are good.
And if I got a good deal on them.Because at this point I am useing stock egnition but want to up grade to electronic.

No electrician here, but you need to check the resistance of the coils. I got a set of Andrews coils with Accel wires off ebay for $56 that checked out at a perfect (for my bike) 3.1 ohms. I'm sure someone who knows what they are talking aout will chime in.

Didn't notice this post... To check the coils, get a multimeter. Put it in Ohms scale. There are two sets of windings and if the windings check out good, that is about all the testing you can do without a coil tester which you might be able to find in a fancy bike shop.

The two sets of windings are primary and secondary. Measuring resistance will tell you if there is an indication that the windings are shorting or not. To check primary, put you meter in its lowest scale multiplier and put one lead from the meter on one of the two small lugs where the wires from your points connect and the other on the lug where your power connects. The blue Andrews coils are 3OHM coils I think so you should see between 3.2 and 4.5 Ohms I suspect... not really positive but this will be the range. Test both coils.

The second check is for resistance on the secondary windings. Take your plug wires off and put the meter in a higher multiplier (Ohms scale) such as X10K or X20K and put the leads on the metal contacts where the plug wires would normally contact and attach. You should get about 15K Ohms... this value will vary greatly from coil type to coil type... I would guess between 12K and 20K. Without knowing the exact resistance to expect, I would rely on both coils being close to the same.

Probably best to do this checking with the coils out of the bike but it can be done with the coils mounted but be careful when checking primary resistance that you don't touch the power lug and frame as it will arc... do this stuff with the key OFF to avoid any potential arcing.
