Can one of those work for my 1000? I've seen post here about it , but does anyone really have one that works, like the cordless ones?

Yes they will work.

No it is not recommended.

Illumination is a problem.

Yes, they are more precise than a motorcycle speedometer.

I had a BC800 model in my ZX11 before my VR2. It worked great!... But I don't know if they still make this unit. I think modern units are backlighted.

I've got one on my KZ right now..but the problem I'm having is that the pickup isn't strong/precise enough to track the speed over 60mph. I'd see it fluctuating between 60 and 80mph, when I knew I was doing at least 80mph (~130kph).

It goes up to 99mph, which is plenty fast for me..above 100mph, does a specific speed really matter anymore? :P

I've moved where the pickup is attached on the fork leg, and I'll see how it works this year, but I was happy with it while I used it..and yeah, illumination is a problem. I thought about opening up the computer unit and backlighting it with an LED, but haven't done that yet. I may just get a small booklight or something and point the light at it instead.

Mine's wired, and it isn't that big of a deal - there are two other cables running in the same direction already.

This is it. And I'm using a strong earth magnet instead of the magnet that comes with it. The magnet fits perfectly in the holes in the brake rotor (between the bolts - not on the brake surface itself!) - nice and tight, and flush - it's like it's made for it :)
