A quick way to check your static timing is to put a thin piece of paper between the point contacts. I hear that rolling papers work good for this (although I have no personal experience with such items).
With the points gripping the paper, turn the motor. When the points open enough to allow the paper to slip free, that's the opening point, and you read the timing mark on the timing plate.

Good idea on the papers,I keep a few around for emerg. use. Got to find a way to set up #3&4 points right.I must have to move them on the plate, and keep moving until the F mark lines up on this set of points. I'll know where the letters are on the keyboard for "points" after this is over.Ha.Ha!
