Worn carbs need replacing - carb swap was created by dj.jarvis
Hello !!
Greetings from Ireland !!
First post - hope the good people here can steer me in the right direction!!
OK so, i have checked the posts and cannot find the answer i am looking for but sorry if its there and i missed it, I did look !!
I have a 1982 KZ1100 Spectre shaft drive, got it as a basket case of a bike
Some one had taken a angle grinder to it so no saving it as original - So its now my cafe racer project.
so have it re wired , and starts OK, but the carbs are running well rough. I have put in new jets seals and set up per Kawasaki but still runs dreadful
Not the shims as i done all those and valves are fine.
Its looking like the carbs are just worn out as refurb kit didnt do much of anything.
So , my question is this, has anyone done or know of a set of carbs from another bike that will fit the KZ1100 ? As in just bolt on, no need for spacers or new carb boots ?
I have spent many an hour lookin on line but no luck - guessing some GPZ carbs or Z ones might work, but they are very hard to get not worn out either.
is there a modern (ish) set of carbs that will bolt onto my KZ ?
Many thanks in advance !!

You may want to digest this carb rebuild tutorial to see if there are any steps you missed. This tutorial is slightly different from your carbs, but 95% of the stuff is the same. Chances are, your carbs can be saved with a full and complete rebuild. You will need to replace all the various O-rings. Carb rebuild kits don't come with all the various sizes, and a couple of the sizes listed in the tutorial won't fit a KZ carb. I've got O-ring kits if you can't find what you need locally.

Also, is the factory air filter and its box in place? If you are running open carbs or velocity stacks or even individual filters (aka pods), the carbs must be rejetted to compensate for the changes.
What brand of parts did you rebuild with? A lot of aftermarket stuff is crap.
Keihin and Mikuni make excellent performance carbs that will bolt on, but they are not inexpensive.

Why do you think yours are worn out?

Hi , Thanks for your reply, some good info there !!
The rebuild kit was a generic ebay one, but, did have original sized jets along with all the gaskets and rubber seals.
And yes, you could be right about jetting as i am running aftermarket filters so up jetting might be the next step to try
Well , up jetting is the cheapest option, i looked at the link you sent for the new carbs, man they cost a few Euros for sure !!
As for the worn point, they are 42 year old carbs , with brand new kit installed and sometimes with bank of 4 carbs, the mechs just "wear" out
but ill fire new jets in and see how i get on , many thanks !!

Carburetors don't really wear out, other than the soft parts, like o-rings and fuel Tee rubbers, getting hard and not sealing well. The throttle shaft bushings are good for 100k miles, easy.
The important thing when refurbishing a set of carbs is to perform a complete job. Most guys don't want to go through the trouble of unganging the carbs, replacing worn O-rings, soaking the bodies in carb dip, etc.
A rebuild is NOT about buying cheap rebuild kits, with inferior jets, and installing them after shooting the carbs with a can of carb spray. Do the job right, and the carbs will run properly.
For a bike running pod airfilters, first thing is to buy quality pods, then get a Dynojet kit and install that. This will take the trial and error out of having to rejet.

I met a man at a motorcycle cafe, who I’d heard about but this was the first time meeting in person. He had an old Yami FJ1200 in amazing shape.
He told me his carburetors were worn out because the slides were loose in their bores. His FJ had 156,000 miles on it! That I could believe.
But what he told me next boggled my mind… In 156,000 miles (not km) he has never adjusted his valves. He told me it was bothering him so he had a mechanic check them at 135,000 miles. They were all in spec!
So, in one bike… worn out carbs and valves good for 156,000 miles (at least).
