Wet weather pod mod

Hey, the boss went out for a few hours today, he hadn't planned the day corectly, I was without anything to do and bored!
Now, seing that my bike is visible from the front door of work, and I was bored standing there, I got to thinking what I could do to the bike. Have had the rain and pod problem in the back of my head for a while, so got out some scrap vinyl, and shock cord and knocked this up.
The vinyl covers only about 90 degrees of the outer pods, leaving heaps of breathing ability for the engine (it ran fine with it on on the way home).
I stil think I will only run it when raining though, as the pods look too cool..or maybe I will make one out of clear vinyl.
And yeah, check out my side covers ! LOL!

Looks good!
On some bikes, the air filter is part of the body work (not sure how it is on the 650). I usally try to keep the stock air box and modify it to incorporate the pods.
Heres a pic of my GT 750 (Suzuki). I put a set of 38mm flat slides on it and modified the stock air box for the Uni pod filters.

I would use a factory airbox, but the bike didn't come with one, just had the pods on it. The stock air boxes are as rare as rocking horse poo over here, I tried for a while to get one!
Besides, the empty airbox space is becoming a great place to store things.

Go Water Buffalo! I had one of those... a '75.

If anyone reads Motorcycle Classics magazine, in the issue before the last, they had a great spread featuring the water buffalo. I really like the magazine and it has become one of my favorites. Last issue was the Yamaha 650 single featured. Still lots of loyal owners and groups dedicated to some of these less well known models and they are fun to bring back to mind. I haven't seen some of these bikes in many years.

There's a Suzuki like that at one of the marinas I go to for work, seems to be a daily ride, as it's always there, but in a different spot. Same colour too.
I guess they were one of the earlier water cooled bikes?

There are 2 650 air boxes on ebay at the moment, and I have a spare as well. 1979 Air box
1980 Air box
Mine is from a '79 as well.

Hmmmm, I think I have more 650 airboxes than Ive had bikes or parts bikes, they must be mating, along with turn signals in my garage

i ordered some "snow chargers" made by K&N. i had them cut down. They are like a "pre-filter" for the pod type filters. they are meant for snow mobiles, so they are water resistant. the water is supossed to bead off of them.
i have ridden in the rain and had no problems.

ride REALY REALLY fast and the rain wont even touch your bike

Now thats really interesting. I found them on the K&N website. The only thing they dont give is a price.

I've had pods for years on my 650 and ridden through some hellacious downpours with no issues. Once I rode 400 miles from Charlotte to Atlanta in pouring rain the whole way. Have you waited to see if you have a problem? Or are you just trying to be pro-active. I've always wondered what people are concerned about with wet weather and pods..... it just hasn't been a problem for me!
