Guessing 1982 - this an early version with the Blue Magnum carbs (think Lectrons )that they tried for a while.
I never saw those carburetors on any other bike and they went straight back to CRS with the 750 Superbikes. I'll bet those Blue carbs made power up top but didn't have the transitional response required for broad throttle response. I know several guys that tried Lectrons in applications other than drag racing and they did couldn't make them work...

There were a few of us that ran Blue Magnums in the 1982 Superbike class. I modified mine to eliminate the 2 glaring problems with them. After modification, they worked better than conventional carbs...and the bike was very fast.LarryC wrote:

The mods were admired and emulated by the Japanese engineers from Kawasaki and S&W.
problem 1; heavy return spring req'd to overcome the stiction of the flat slide to carb body upon decel, when engine vacuum was high.
solution was a rack and pinion style bellcrank on carb rack so the carb slides were mechanically opened AND closed...not relying on spring or cable to close them.
problem 2; very hard to adjust the mixture. Even though there was only one mixture adjustment for metering range, the carb needed disassembly for any tweak. Fine tuning was therefore too inconvenient, leaving mixture incorrect at times.
solution was to replace center rod in slide with a machined brass piece that extended all the way into carb. The mixture adj screw was then placed inside this tube with the hollow extending to the top. This exposed hollow allowed for a simple screwdriver to reach into the bowels of the carb and adjust mixture like a lawnmower.
My bike never ran better, but I foolishly traded those carbs to a drag racer after my retirement from Pro racing in 1983
this is the only pic I could find with those carbs in it...but the carbs were painted black and they dont show up
