Gents, I've 3 roller bearing cranks which I've aquired over the years, and have no idea of their "True". I would like to purchase a rod (if cheap enough) to "rough check" rod heights. Does anyone have a suggestion or 2 where I might source such a piece of stock ?

The rod in question is a 17mm drill blank - a nice, straight rod... If you can fit the rod in the 17mm holes in all four rods where the piston pins normally go, the crank will be a straight one. The holes are VERY tight and you may have to grease the rod up a tad. I think you can get the rods from McMaster-Carr or whatever that tool place is called. I think that is where I got mine. I also think that scientific folks call this "indexing the crank" but I might be mixed up on that fact...

Ya patton is right, I use a 17mm polished drill rod that I got from msc industrial but I am sure you can buy them at mcmaster carr or grainger. Thats what I use when I weld up cranks.

My thanks to all.. At 25 bucks & shipping Travers is my opt. and reasonable to me despite the fact that I don't feel myself competent to push around a 4 cyl crank. (Falicon & Vance & Hines have inspected/trued welded all my roller crank projects in the past & I'm happy.) again thanks g

I don't think this is something you want to do in the garage unless you have the proper tooling to do so. Your crank will pull when you weld it, just like everything else does. As for where to do it that would be on both ends of every pin in the counterweights not an easy task with the crank assembled I imagine.
