To easily remove and install centerstand spring ---

Remove --- with bike on centerstand, press pennies between spring coils. Then push bike off centerstand (and support on sidestand). Centerstand spring should remain extended enough to easily remove with minimal pulling, if any.

Reinstall --- with spring on bench, bend the spring to create a gap between the coils and insert a penny in the gap. Do this several times, pressing several pennies in successive gaps so that the spring remains extended. Then (with pennies remaining in place) install spring, attaching at both ends, and raise bike onto centerstand. The pennies usually just fall out.

I knew I should have checked this forum last night. :S

I spent a bunch of time wrestling with that darn spring putting it on and off while trying to get the center stand adjusted...read big hammer...as it was bent and making contact with the exhaust. I will need to remove/install it again soon and will try this out, GREAT TIP, thanks. :cheer:

works on kickstands also.i remember trying to be slick and pull a brake pedal and spring in one shot so i wouldnt scratch the frame.broke the outside of my ear for my troubles of having head to close and being more worried about that damn frame as the meat tenderizer on the brake pedal came around and slammed me in the side of head!be very carefull around springs guys,lots of freaking stored energy there! :S

Still recovering,some days are better than others.

Neat trick. Another good spring tool that I use along with my automotive brake tools is an old PTO handle and shaft. I leave just about 3/4" of cable on the shaft and bend it into a U shape. Leave the knob on and it makes a really good spring tool. I had one in my tool box at work for over 15 years now.

1980 KZ1000 LTD-B4(MK II engine) - Progressive suspension, MTC pistons, Dynojet Stage III, all wear items replaced, WFO paint scheme(1978), etc..

Past bikes- 2 1976 Kz900's, 5 1975-76 Honda CB750's, Honda 500 -4, Honda 250, Honda 125, Honda 100, Suzuki RM 250, Honda XL350, Kawasaki KLR 650, etc..

Wow I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one to have trouble with that beast of a spring.

Sbc1320....could you post a pic sometime? I have a smaller spring puller and was trying to think of a way to make a larger one.
