Thanks for the info. My manual doesn't show this. The bolt and nut look like they're one piece. I'm off now to give it a go.

Some older model 650's had a lip around the base of the advancer where it bolted to the end of the crank. If there is a lot of rust its going to want to stick to the end of the crank even with the bolt removed. Spray with WD40 and let sit then gently tap it with a rubber/plastic mallet in a few places to see if that will loosen it.
