shims or timing ? was created by Fox
Hello all !

i post here to have a little bit of help.
My kz1000 ltd 78 have a "click click" sound from the right side of the top block.
To me at shims...
But i check my shims yesterday and all are on specs...
But when i checked i see that  :
picture #1  : ex aligned an T mark aligned
picture #2  : ex aligned an T mark aligned
picture #3  : ex not aligned with  the crackcase when i'm on the T mark
picture #4  : ex aligned an T mark aligned

How is that possible? What is the problem ?

The pic you have posted does not relate to the 78 z1000 engine with roller camchain.
It relates to the later J type with hyvo "silent " type camchain and those timing marks cannot be used with the earlier engine.
The attached pic is what you should be using as reference.

Hello,

the picture i post is for valve shims clearance check.
The picture you send me is to set the timing. I did it like that.
Your first pic is for the later engine so does not apply for either cam timing or shim checks.
The cam sprockets and markings are totally different.
You should be using the relevent manual for the engine type and model.
Regardless of engine type you just need to make sure the cam is fully on the base circle to perform clearance checks.
To be 100% certain of this then make sure the cam lobe is facing directly away from the shim.

Yes i did this method too. But with shims at specs i always have this 'click click' sound.

When i put the exhaust camshaft sprocket in place at the T mark the arrow and the 0 pin can't be perfectly aligned with the cylinder head surface (like in the example). But a little more up.
Between the 0 and the 1st pin in fact...  Normal ?
To have the exhaust camshaft sprocket in place at the T mark the arrow and the 0 pin aligned with the cylinder head surface i must pass the T mark a little bit...

Yes! Normal.
Very rarely does the pin line up exactly with the surface.
This is due to camchain wear or deck height tolerances, gasket thicknesses etc.
When doing the cam timing always use which ever pin is closest to the head surface and count that as zero regardless of whether it is slightly above or below.
If the head surface is exactly between two pins then use the pin below the surface as chain wear etc will gradually bring that pin closer to the gasket face.

so i'm lost. I have no more idea. Shims are on specs and timing is good. And i have this sound.
I did timing with the lighting methode too. The lighting  perfectly light at 1 and 4 cylinders on the first mark "advenced timing mark" and a little bit late for the 2 and 3 cylinder but before the 2nd mark...
any idea ?

Out of curiosity were all the buckets flooded with oil? Unless they are the bucket can wear the head as it slides up and down. The clicking you can hear could be the bucket rocking slightly as the cam depress's it every rotation.

Without actually hearing the bike it's hard to say.
Some ticking from the shims ( if it is that ) is natural and better that than no noise and tight clearances.
My Z1R has a tick which comes and goes as it pleases with no ill affects and no visible or measurable cause.
It's been like that on and off since i built it 22 years ago.

The sound could be a leaking exhaust gasket.

interesting. The left part of the engine is always flooded by oil when i open the top block probably because of the side stand.
I don't see oil like that on the right part.
I ever apply oil with a paint brush... no more.
