Red chunks of "something" in the oil pan was created by OkieZ1000
Greetings all,

I hope 2022 is treating everyone well.

I was doing some winter repairs on the 82 KZ1000 K2 which included changing the oil pan gasket.  When I pulled the bottom pan and began to clean it (1st time since I purchased the bike), I notice red "chunks" of some hard material in the bottom of the pan.  I picked out 3 of the larger chunks and took a photo of them (attached).  There was enough material there to have been something.   I don't have any running issues, just wasn't expecting to find this.

Does anyone have any idea what the red chunks could have been in their former life?

Thanks
Scott

Your picture isn't showing up, but you probably know that.

Soft & squishy, like hi temp RTV? No? Maybe clutch disc material. It happens.

Don't be ridiculous! It's only a flesh wound!

The red chunks are broke off epoxy glue from the alternator rotor magnets.

Out of pure curiosity; can a rotor with broken magnet chunks be used? My understanding was it had to be replaced for balance issues.

Is that the case?

I´m going to look into mine right now. Have never undone the cover...

The missing part in the picture is only the excess epoxy that has squeeezed out when the magnets have been applied, you are right that any rotating parts need to be balanced. An out of balance part starts a harmonic vibration that at best will make the motor feel rough and at worst cause the crank to fail.

Why? I should have imagined it! This bike will be great again, but it is really a disaster…

my rotor magnets are broken. I’m inclined to epoxy them for the moment

Personally I wouldn't recommend anything less than a "correct" repair on a part that spins at up to 9,000rpm   This bike will love you forever (like an abused rescue dog you give a warm home, food and affection)

Yes, of course. You are right.

Will start investigating on the extractor tool and support. If you think about it, everything points towards a total disassemble

where can I find a replacement rotor? Is there a cross reference to any other bike?
