Is that an engine you're building? Looks like it's going to be exciting.I’m not an engine builder but I believe own eyes.

It seems like there some disagreement about the 900 vs 1000 block. But Mikaw makes a pretty persuasive argument. The only other post I found talking about blocks was one that mentioned that early 900 blocks used a different casting with less material. Maybe Injected has an early 900 block?

I reread Larry's recommendations again. When talking about either a J or GPz head on a KZ, he says "It’s possible to shave the J head to bring compression back up but that’s really not the best method. The correct way is to use the proper pistons & correct the deck height by adding a spacer under the cylinder block."
So what does he mean by "proper pistons."
Looking at the APE page, it says the J and GPz rods are 1.6mm shorter, so the wrist pin hole was moved down in the piston (I'm guessing by 1.6mm?). So the spacer Larry suggests would be 1.6mm thick I guess.
APE also says the KZ and J used 17mm pins, while the GPz used 18mm. So even with the spacer, an 18mm pin piston would not be useful on a 17mm KZ rod end.
However, looking at the MTC site for the GPz1100 pistons, the specs say "WRIST PIN SIZE: 17MM (CAN BE HONED TO 18MM)". That seems to be saying the pistons come machined for 17mm pins, which would allow them to be used with the KZ rods. So that seems like a possible answer to which pistons to use with the GPz/Kz hybrid.

I'm sure Larry knew the answer, and APE should know as well. I'm surprised no one has written it down.

Parts I picked up a few years ago, I always wanted to build an 1197 motor. This deal came around for i a price I couldn’t turn down. Really I bought it for the sleeves. Then last spring I picked up the 1105 with Yoshi cams and this got shelved. I have a set of cases bored for 1197, and some 410 Russ Collins cams. Missing link is a crankshaft. Sound familiar? Lol

We should mention for some of our members reading this that for oversize ( non stock ) new liners the upper case needs to be bored out to accept the bigger sleeves ( Liners )..

I am not sure if the barrel in question is early or not, I would not know how to tell.
I do have two other 903 barrels, one I took the liners out to go in my 650 with a 70mm bore (831cc) and the other came out of a parts motor that had been bored to 1015. Both of those are the same dimensionally as the one with the broken out fins with the 1197 liners (3.200" OD) The 1015 barrel has to have slightly more aluminum around the sleeves, how much more I do not know.
The guy doing the boring work has a 1197 kit in a 1015cc barrel using GS1150 liners on his personal Z1. He is currently trying to round up the parts required to get me a finished block that can accept my 1197 pistons.
The GS1150 replacement sleeve from Advanced has a 3.192" OD vs the #3030FA Advanced liner for 76mm at 3.200" OD (the one pictured above)

Just searched for a mm to inch conversation. My loose liners 81.33 OD are 3.201. Can I bore the copper ringed 74/1135 liners out to 76?

I think that 81.33 OD with 76 ID leaves 2.665mm wall thickness (5.33/2), which is 0.105" wall thickness.
Seem possible based on what Injected said earlier:
As for those sizes I listed they are absolute maximums, more for drag racing than street riding (less than .080" liner thickness) I would always revert to a smaller bore and thicker liner for longer life (+.100")

While we are on piston/block subject. Anyone have input on these. Z-Power has them for $200.00 usd. 70.5mm 10:25-1. Kit has Pistons, wrist pin, circlips, and rings. How can you go wrong to freshen up a 77-78 Kz1000.
