Clutch not disengaging transmission was created by referman
Hi guys, I just installed my newly rebuilt 1075 motor, filled it with oil and getting everything set for the first start and noticed the clutch is not disengaging the transmission. Would this be because the engine sat for about a month without oil and the plates are sticking? I believe the clutch is adjusted properly i have a good feel on the lever.

If you soaked the friction plates before installing them, then I think there is a really good chance that they are stuck. It should be easy to break them loose. Sit on the bike, pull the clutch lever and then push the bike back and forth a few times until the plates release.

Drive the bike in 3rd or 4th gear with clutch leveler fully pulled. When the engine and oil gets hot the clutch package (fricktion-/ steel plates) will break free. When you pull the cluch leveler, only the spring plate is moving/release by the push rod to the clutch basket. The rest of the clutch package (friction plates to clutch basket / steel plates to inner clutch clutch hub) is sticking together and didn´t dis-engage until engine heat and hot oil penetrade the friction-/ steel plates and break them loose.

One of the gentlest methods to break a clutch loose is to put the bike on the centerstand so the rear wheel can spin freely. Then start the bike, pull the clutch lever & engage first. Keeping the clutch lever pulled, gradually apply rear brake as the rear wheel spins. If the plates are stuck tightly, you may have to apply some throttle while increasing rear brake pressure. It's much kinder to the engagement dogs than slamming into gear with the plates stuck and the rear wheel stationary on the ground.
