Automatic cam chain tensioner install was created by BnB650SR
I had to pull my automatic cam chain tensioner on my ‘79 kz650SR, as it was leaking and the gasket needed to be replaced. However I am having issues reinstalling it as the plunger is designed to only slide out and not in. Can’t seem to find any info on installing it. Does anyone have information on this?

If your tensioner is the automatic type with the opposing wedges, which I believe they were in 1979,  you simply remove the 17mm cap and spring  on the left, (#1 side) and reinstall.

Not sure either of these docs will be of help or not, but wanted to pass them on in hopes they are of help.

The Kawasaki service manual covers both type of cam chain tensioners but the install procedere on both is some kind of confusing to me........

Thank you guys! It did help. I was at work trying to figure it out in my mind. Realized if I push the plunger all the way in, I was able to crank down the lock bolt and keep It in place. Bolted it back up, released the lock bolt, and then tighten lock bolt. Couple beers last night must have hindered my thought process. It is all back together now.
