On Marketplace near me. It's been up for some weeks now. Seller is asking 3k, which is a bit out of my price range. Claims it needs carbs cleaned and brakes bled, so I assume it needs more than that.  Such as...a tank.

It’s not a ‘76. Looks more like a 1977 1000 B1 frame with “A” parts mixed in. ‘77 rear caliper.

Edit, might be 1979 mags. The drilled rotors are ‘79-‘80. 1976 Kz900 gauges?

That depends on you. You can turn the handlebars back up and if it runs it might be a keeper.
This is what I started with in 2014 and I RODE THE PISS OUT OF IT as I made it better.

Hmm. Don't mind it being parts-bin, don't mind needing to work on it, don't mind it being ugly. I don't really know what these go for in any condition (though there's a LTD up for 3.5k in much better condition nearby), but I'm reluctant to undercut the asking price too much...just kinda seems like the guy is waiting for a sucker to bite? I'm kind of a sucker.

I am absolutely not an expert on that bike, but I do look at Craig’s List a lot, and do have a little bit of an idea about what bikes should go for based on condition. The price on this one is a bit high. But it is a good bike when restored. I would wait on it a bit. Close that tab on your browser and if it never pops up again, it was never the right one. But if you see it again in a week or two, you will know the seller isn’t getting a quick sale, and you have more room to bargain. Go check it out in person. Have an idea what you want to pay in mind, and offer that. See what they say. My guess is you can get it for less. Maybe not omg screaming deal money, but at around $2k you might be doing pretty well.

I'm thinking the engine is 76 but much of the bike looks newer, and LTD model as Mikaw pointed out.  As for price...I'm looking at a 78 right now.  The owner is asking 3500 CAD.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Kinda looks like the same condition as the Turd I just bought for $1500, missing turn signals, missing rear fender I just love the rear fender delete (not)! and I promise the brakes will need more than bled. I just spent over $400 rebuilding all the brakes on my 76 LTD. Just keep in mind your gonna have to spend some $$$$ to get it roadworthy. I'm really surprised it still has the stock airbox!

Got to be honest I'm deeply envious of you boys stateside. In the UK this is about the starting point for anything Pre 1981. When I bought my 82 there was a 76 900 Ltd for £2,500 but it had no top end, exhaust, carbs, instruments or wiring (basically a roller with a bottom end and title)

In a more expensive market like yours, it means people love and appreciate old bikes more than here in NA.

If you want the big engine torque it may be worth $2500 to you.
Its a bitsa bike (bits of this and bits of that) so if redone it will not be worth anything. If you just want a rider then ask what the numbers are on the barrel, it could have had a bigger top end grafted on it which is common.
Ask the owner if it says 903cc or 1015cc on the barrel.
If you ask this question you already come across as someone who has done the research, which is key in some transactions.
Bigger is always better if you can get it, so if its already at 1015 then it maybe worth it.

Just went 1075 and ported a junk head I picked up. She started as a 900 the "Fastest Production Motorcycle" at the time then a 1015 now a 1075. Each thing I did made it faster and more stable. It will never be stock again but it's better and it's mine. You might call it a sleeper.   Maybe I should put 900 badges back on it and have fun with the other bikes.
As for value? I stopped counting after $3500 in work in 2015. It's mine, always gets me there and I love it.
Some guys do this to theirs but I can't see it doing the things Bossie does.
