1978 Z200 project was created by beekay
Hey guys, new

scored a fun project for the winter. a 78 z200 15k miles. internals look good and clean, tank was treated (marvels or some other smelling mystery oil). the old owner lost the keys long ago, so this one has been sitting in moth balls and bounced around from place to place breaking of bits here and there. rubber is naturally rotted, or missing. no real dents, a little surface rust. what a bonus for $200US (i hope)

This thing looks like a 'perfect' newbie resto project. not sure how deep I am going to restore it, we shall see as I get to work.

yeah, not a computer techie, but i do sell software infrastructure (how weak is that lol)
never learned html editing, cannot figure out how to put multi pics in this post. will do more site homework before next post! Newbie, excuse me!

The one KZ200 I worked on was great. It was neglected for years, but all it needed was a brake cable, caliper cleaning, and some points. I tried several times to buy it off the owner.

In Chicago, where I'm at, those smaller bikes are more desirable than bigger ones, and a good KZ200 usually can't be pried from anybody's hands.

Had a little time away from the bike, as sourcing some parts has been a total PITA! i still cannot find the front brake caliper. its a mechanical brake, and I want to keep it that way, and not modify it to the hydraulic version, not now anyway. finding someone with one of these oversized mtbike brakes is no easy task. many of the junkyards i go to have nothing like it. early 80's they went to hydraulic, so this is getting more rare as the days grow.

the rest of the bike is coming apart nicely. i popped the crank case apart the other day and the oil looked great! nice and clean, so it was put away mostly proper.

Carb was taken apart and I bought a carb rebuild kit. there was much gunk in the carb. i was hoping to leave it as is at least until I got it running, but there was too much gunk in there and even after soaking it, i decided it was probably better to just give it a shot and do the rebuild. hope I can adjust it to get it running!

Since this thing has been sitting around for a while, many expensive parts have been parted or stolen from this over the years. Since this is my first bike, I don't really know what is missing, until i come across it.

I have been painting various parts as they come off. sanding rust off, banging some parts straight, priming and painting. i am going flat black for most of the frame parts. i like the look.

Where this resto is going: i am not likely going to make it a true restoration, but I am also not planning to hot rod a 200cc bike from 1978! i think there will be mostly old parts, some new parts where it makes sense, and no particular attention to making it a pure period piece. I like to mix things up a little.

a mechanical caliper? i never knew. that has to be some rare parts. if your missing big stuff, i would say watch ebay and wait for a whole hydraulic set up. i would think one from a 400 might fit.

ebay has been my best friend for this rig. the big bonus is that this thing has not cost me much, yet. $200 for the bike and about $250 in parts with about $300 more to get it finished.
I am avoiding going to a hydraulic system unless I have to. Some things I want to stay as-is, plus it will take from the budget.
