I picked up a running, all-together 79 E model. It looks like it spent most of its time indoors, which is a plus. Normal paint fading and such, but nothing critical. The PO stated that he rebuilt the carbs, but either he didn't sync them (my suspicions) or something else needs looking into. It blows grey smoke that doesn't want to go away. I wanted to check the plugs, but you know how your most common tools have a way of walking off? My 13/16th spark plug socket is on a walkabout or something. I'll have to get another today. It needs a good bath as well as it doesn't look like it's had one in awhile. It was cleaned up to sell, but not detailed.
I'd like to find a kick start lever to keep on hand. Not too many hills around me to bump start, if need be. Anybody familiar with the coils/wires? Damn! I love this body style Z!

What in the world is going on with the coils? I thought MINE were mounted in a janky way...anyway, nice bike. I'd like the same model someday.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

The carbs weren't rebuilt. I'm getting intermittent firing. One time, cylinders 1 and 3 firing, then, 1 and 2. No fuel to those carbs. I think it's been sitting for long, floats are sticking. I can always take the carbs that I had rebuilt for the project bike, and put them on.
Before I really started on it, I had to tighten spark plugs, carb boots, and the petcock was leaking. Replaced fuel and vacuum lines from tank. Tank is spotless inside. That will sure ease some potential issues. I don't think this tank is the correct one. The mounting tab meets nothing on the frame. The seat rubs on the tank and tail section when closing it. I think those problems are related to the new seat cover. Not sure if there's supposed to be a seat lock, but nothing's there.
I've never been a fan of low slung exhaust. I priced a Delkavic, so I'll probably go with that. I have one on my Suzuki, and cans for the Yamaha, so I'm good with their products. Tires on order. It has ancient Touring Elites on it now. Next weekend is a 3 day weekend, so I'll hammer away at it...

I got it running fairly well last night. I believe it blew a fork seal, and sprayed fork oil all over the front of the motor. I guess that happened when tying it down. So, the bike smoked really bad from the outside, anyway. I need to get out there with an aluminum safe engine cleaner. It didn't have any plate on it when I bought it, so I'll take one off another of my bikes and take it for a spin.

Thanks! Can't wait to ride it. I haven't transferred title yet, and no tags. I just got the Vmax registered as an antique bike, so I have a plate that is good through June that I can throw on it to take it for a spin. As long as the tires don't give, lol.

I haven't really tackled this bike like I wanted to. I drove it around the block (a two mile block, that is,) and it's got plenty of get up and go. Those tires, though...I did go through and find some bad components. Rear master cylinder is leaking and since I couldn't find a kit, I got some stuff, including a new rear mc from Z1Enterprises. I'm STILL looking for a place to mount my tires for me. It's ridiculous down here. Shops that work when they want to, other places that won't mount them since I didn't buy them there, etc. New Delkevic header will be going on this weekend. I'm on vacation next week, so I'll go down to the DMV and get the title changed as well as licensing it as an antique. Tags are good for 5 years and you don't have to worry about state inspections. $50 well spent. I really want to clean it up and get some pics. I'll do that next week as well.
