Managed to get an hour or so on the bike today, small progress, but progress nevertheless, fitted new swing arm bearings and fitted it into the frame. I had a good pair of shocks from a ZRX1200, so they went on next. The ZRX being a little lighter than an old Z650, so the spring rate should be ok. However, the top eyelet is 17mm, while the Z650 mounting stub is only 14mm. Will have to make a pair of sleeves to take up the difference..

Did you make the caliper brackets before you painted/powder coated everything ? I ask because I never paint the mating surfaces on the wheels.

The caliper brackets aren't painted, just polished, If needed could have them hard anodised, as that doesn't change the dimensions of the part.

Just for the record - regular anodize does not build up the surface, but hard anodize does. Depending on the thickness of the hard anodize, it is half penetration into the aluminum, and half build up. This is not much as most hard anodizing is no more than .003" - .004" thick, but that build up needs to be considered depending on the application. FYI

Maybe i should have been clearer. I mean the disc mating surface, the wheel where the disc bolts on and the disc adaptor surfaces, the surfaces where they bolt together should be left unpainted...

The powder coaters specialise in bikes, so they know not to coat bearing surfaces , brake mating surfaces etc. The adaptor rings have been cerakoted, which I was assured works like hard anodising, certainly the threaded holes of the coated rings took their bolts no problem.

You do really nice work and obviously know what you are doing, the only concern is that having a coating can cause the disc to run out of true and could cause pad knock back, this is of course only my opinion

For sure, hence I went for the expensive option of cerokoting the adaptor rings.

You'd be surprised at just how little it takes..
