Making some progress....

I also got the carbs and airbox pulled off the bike - what a job......now I know why guys go with the pod filters.....they don't want to have to try to get all the carbs and boots all jammed back into place!
I hooked up a battery charger to the battery terminals, and all the lights, turn signals, brake lights, and starter all work.
Probably the worst looking part on the bike is the battery box. Looking at it, both inside and outside the motorcycle, I thought it was a total loss. But I got my media blasting cabinet set up and working this weekend and decided to give it a try with the battery box. WOW....I'm impressed.
I also bought a cheap harbor freight powder coating system (but ordered the good Sherwin Williams powder!) so that battery box and the bar clamps will for sure be in my first batch that I cook. I found an electric oven off of Craigslist yesterday and hope to have an outlet wired up in the garage for it today after work.

The battery was still attached - right? If not, don't ever do that again. On a primitive bike you can likely get away with it, but without the battery to buffer the voltage of the charger you can fry a lot of expensive electronics.

I hadn't thought about that, thanks.....I have a 12v car battery right in the room.....

I agree on the original airbox...it's a beast to install. I switched my 1980 KZ1000 to a Z1 airbox and no more problems.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Thanks. I need to clean it up a bit more and pull all the rubber parts out, and then it will be my first attempt at powder coating. I am wiring up an outlet in my garage today after work for an electric oven that I picked up off of Craigslist. The battery box is a good part to start with, because if it doesn't turn out perfect, it's not a very visible part.
