'84 GPz900r build

Hey everybody, it's been a long time but I'm back (again...) I know it's not a kz but I figure its close enough and there is likely enough knowledge here about these bikes to make it worth my while, and perhaps worth yours as well.

I sold all of my kz related stuff to a guy near Ottawa who races KZ1000's and wanted everything I had, so I had a clear slate. My wife's cb350 has been stalled on the bench for years, and I recently wanted something a little more fun that the KLR for on road usage, and I have an ATV now for off road. I was looking at liquid cooled bikes, zg1000, v65 sabre, etc...when a local classifieds ad showed me a biek I've always had on my bucket list...the top gun bike. zx900a1. for cheap.... its got 97000km on it, but was more or less rebuilt 12k ago. it was mostly stock other than pods jetting and a stupid vance and hines pipe. I bought it.

I plan on doing a restomod on it, the lower fairing is toast, and with this kind of mileage and the horrid paint job I don't feel bad not keeping it stock. 17" wheel front and back, raise the ass a bit, tidy up the hoses and engine, and some fresh paint and a new pipe. I'll post pics later, the bike is getting its safety inspection done...heres hoping!

I look forward to your project. My '83 Gpz750A/Turbo build is on hold for a bit but I'm heading the same direction as you want to. Trying to incorporate the Japanese Resto-Mod look like a few of the Sanctuary and other builders do.

the ac sanctuary guys have some amazing work and I really do want to make mine somewhat in that style. I took it in for safety today and it needs some work. Thankfully its stuff I want to replace anyways. It needs a rear tire and rotor and pads....well, I guess I'll just swap on a 17" rear rim with rotor and tire

Mine needed a chain and rear sprocket so I thought that a '93 Vfr750 parts bike was worth double the price of a new sprocket and chain set. And everything started snow-balling quickly. :whistle:

I just paid for a zx600d rear wheel from eBay. From my research it's a good candidate for a 900r wheel swap as it has the same axle diameter and it's only 4.5" wide so it won't be as much issue lining everything up and making it fit. Just wondering about chain alignment, I've never done a wheel swap. I put on a modern front master cylinder and took apart the rear caliper

SO I got the new rear wheel on, here are some pics.

I ended up reusing the sprocket and rotor from the 600 wheel. The rotor was 40mm smaller in diameter so I cut and welded the caliper bracket 20mm shorter to make it fit. It looks good on there, haven't got a pic of that yet though.
