First Thank You for your service !!
Hopefully you have purchased a factory service manual, Not a aftermarket one.
It will become your best friend. Lots of great advise here , but a manual is key to sucsess

Also took off the right side cover and as I suspected, found my kickstarter setup. I also test fit the kz650 side cover I picked up and it fits no problem. That said, I will have a spare 750 left cover if anyone needs it.

On that note, the next step I'll need to do is split the case... will I need to take the rest of the cylinder head off containing the pistons or can I just separate top from bottom at this point? Or is there another trick to getting into that part of the engine case? I'm by no means an expert here, just a hobbiest so any input is welcome.

Hello Rave71

I am not an expert in 1981 kz750 motors but usually you can separate top from bottom at this point,(gear shifter cover and ignition cover removed?).
Then fix the cylinder to fall off and remove the oil pan to get to the oil pump.
DonĀ“t use any force to split the case (hidden or forgotten screws), only light tabs with a rubber hammer or a pice of wood.

But to go 100% safe get the FSM here.

They are there! I just didn't look to see if they were tapped or not. I will double check to let you know. We are getting a cold snap up here in NY this weekend and I don't think my propane heater will cut it in the single digits so Not much work getting done this weekend.

I do have the FSM... It came with the bike and has been incredibly helpful but getting feedback on here is always helpful, sometimes I'm left scratching my head reading that thing! Thank you for the printout though!
