these old bikes are known to be flexiflyers with three back bones, you cut two out  .
it is your bike and your butt, you get to do whatever you want.
i dig chops more than most (round here)but it would seem that as you obviously lack no fab skills, that you would clip that stock back bone tube out and use a piece of .120 wall 1 1/2 o.d. dom tubing.
that is the same size used on old iron head sportsters and makes tank fitment easy as that is what a bunch of tanks are made to fit.
i would also think that while you were at it that cutting the front downtubes aout and cleaning up the neck might be a worthwhile endevor as well.
kinda like this,
this is my favorite chopped, swingarm kz tho.
just throwin some ideas out there, not tryin to talk sh!t or bust chops.
i am all about building 100mph deathtraps believe me.
but i would hate for you to get done and then have a pant shitting experience and come back and go "guys why didn't you tell me these frames were built outta plumbers pipe?"
if you didn't know, now ya know.
thats my .02 fwiw,i can't wait to see what you come up with.
keep us posted,
leon
I don't know why, but this song springs to mind when I look at that frame.....
