KZ750 budget/resto mod build

Picked up this gem with 10,856 on the clock. For $600 and running, can't pass it up!







Decided to start off small as I patiently await the UPS guy to deliver the first round of goodies to get the build started! So far just the side covers are done, thinking about doing the tank aswell but putting vinyl around compound curves is no joke!






More to come when the UPS man arrives!

Couldn't get the metal spacer or whatever off the bottom, and seeing as how I had to grind down the stem a bit.....

An hour later, spacer off and stem shaved down a bit

Grind the underside of the triple a bit so that it can sit a little lower in the top of the neck

Top bearing installed

Forks, wheel, calipers installed


Tomorrow, bleed brakes, throw on exhaust, wire up lights and should be roadworthy!

It was hot as hadies yesterday so only a little progress. Brakes mounted up and bled. Also installed headlight bucket and turn signals. Not a fan at all of the signals, but they will get me on the road. Plan is to take the shorter, front signals and put them on the rear, and get aftermarkets for the front.

I'm sure I'm the only one that will say it (even if some others may think it) but I'm glad that's not my triple tree! What a hatchet job :blink:

Hey gotta do the best with the tools that you have! If I had the resources to have the stem put on some sort or lathe and triple ground down/shaved the proper way, I would have. Can't justify the $350 price quotes I was given to pressout the KZ stem and $200 to enlarge the bottom of the triple. Not balking at the prices as I understand it costs money to run a business, but $500 to make a stem/bearing fit just isn't worth it on a $600 bike. So a $3.95 grinding stone and $4 cut off wheel it is! Besides, you can't even see the stem, and the bottom of the triple is painted and such a close fit, again, never be seen by anyone but me
