I am enjoying the sh@t out of this thread, it"s like watching the the little guys hit the ball at pony league, everyone yelling "HIT THE BALL" kids all sweating and nervous and sh@t, this is one for the archives!
Rarely do I comment on someone's build telling them how to do something unless they ask, but like I said I was reading through the thread and seen Joe going in a direction of a bad situation. So I just made a suggestion on replaceing the lower frame cross member he had cut in half insted of scab welding it together. I could care less what he does but I thought I would just spare him some griff down the road.
Hey Slingshot, That is some masterful tig weldinG!!!
I knew the Master "Puppet", who built dragbike chassis's since the 70's! "God Speed PuP"
People around the world said "he could weld stainless steel to toilet paper"
He "PuP" would have complimented that welding!
Just my opinion!
My first car tire chassis had 2 pieces of "C" channel, stick welded together to make rectangular tubing, for the hardtail swingarm. And a homemade 2 piece, aluminum wheel hub for an offset car tire, 8" Centerline rim with a 9" goodyear. Too bad I don't have any digital pics of it!
Oh yea! The backbone fuel tank was 1-1/2" schedule 40 black pipe too! With a 3/8" brass, ball cock, gas valve.
Talk about a low budget dragster! It went 6.0's in the 1/8
Livin in "CheektaVegas, NY
Went thru 25 of these in 40 yrs.
I SOLD OUT! THE KAW BARN IS EMPTY.
More room for The Old Girl, Harley 75 FLH Electra Glide,

One other consideration to the particular tube that you cut in half. You will be asking that tube to preform a duty that it was not originally engineered to do. That is to take the load from the lower shock linkage. Therefore, there will be additional and constant stress on that tube. Before it just tied the frame together and occasionally held the bike up on the center stand. I'm sure that the tube is plenty strong, but by trying to weld it in the center you are creating a weak spot where it needs it least. Please know that I am not criticizing your welding skills. Lord knows you are probably a better welder than I am. It won't cost you really anything to ensure that you have a solid tube in there. I bet you could find a scrap piece that long at a steel yard. My local yard sells scrap for 50 cents a pound. What is that $2, dependent on the length of the piece that you buy? Just my .02.
There's not a thing wrong with that lower tube for the shock mount if it's done correctly. I've got 5000 miles on one to prove it. But hey... WTF do I know. I've only already done this and ridden the bike 5000 miles :S
For starters, the lower tube gets rejoined using a slip fit inner tube that is welded in. The lower shock mount is 3 pieces welded together, the two tabs and an arced plate that forms to the cross member.
That arced plate is then welded to the resectioned lower rail. This not only gives more than sufficient strength, it gives you liberty to position the mount exactly where you want it to obtain the ride height you want and keep the dog leg parallel with the riding plane.
Anyway, that's how I did mine. It's done. It goes straight down. And no...we weren't smoking dope when all this was done :woohoo:

Just curious here. How did you get the inside, slip fit tube in there, and how long is it? Did you spread the frame further, or remove one side? Yikes, lots of innuendo possible with that question, but I'm being serious.
