I just got this 1982 retired police bike from my father in-law. He said that it ran when he bought it from his friend 16 years ago, but he hasn't started it since.
I think the first thing I need to do is see if the engine will run. The gas tank has 1/2 a tank of gas that was left in it and I can see some rust that looks like rust measles in the tank. Not sure of the best way to get the rust out of the tank.
I figure after cleaning the tank, changing the oil, and dropping a new battery in I'll try and fire it up.
Any advise on what needs to be done to a bike that has sat for that long?
Thanks
Brian in VA.

if there is old gas in the tank there is likely also old gas sitting in the carbs. You will for sure have to drain and clean them out.
Nice bike BTW
