So im going to turn it into a drag bike... was created by Kitten Tooth
So i have spent the last couple of day polishing my engine covers with sand paper. You go from coarse to fine grit. i use 150, 220, 400, 600, 800, and then 1500. Sand one way in a scrubbing motion straight back and forth, then go to a finer grit and sand against the previous direction until the lines from the previous grit disappear. The bike is coming along nice. Champion Cycle, my local Kawasaki dealer made a mistake and ordered the wrong gasket:/ Exhaust header gaskets instead of an AC generator cover gasket. SO ANOTHER WEEK LATER... the bike should roar. I'm hoping that the rattle in my engine is gone now since i did the starter clutch thing with new bolts and Thread lock. I also ordered Airbox brackets so now my airbox is safe and sound in a solid position. I am thinking of ordering new airbox boots for the intake side of my carbs. The last set i ordered, i gave to my dad because i already had removed his to use on my bike for testing and his Were already installed on my bike and were brittle so i didn't want to work and squash them around any more than i had to. Im going to buy another left side pannel because mine is cracked in the middle and missing the bottom tab. When i have the bike insured and drivable (after new tires) Then i'll start to modify stuff. I plan on getting a 4into1 header, extended swing are, fiber glass tail section, aftermarket electronic Tach, Halogen headlight and LED tail lights, and front blinkers. I plan on moving my Key ignition and starter button under the front side of the gas tank. I was also going to ride the bike of the ugly odometer that is in a big plastic box on the handle bars... next week, the bike should be drivable. For the 4into1 header, i heard that when the bike is lowered with the extended swing arm, you can drag the muffler when you do right turns. I was going to remove the muffler and have the end of the pip stick out of the bottom like on the Buell XB12SS.

If you are thinking of a Vance n Hines header the side winder is the one that will screw with the turning on a street bike. It is a drag racing pipe and is designed just for that, going straight. Get the street megaphone if you are planning to ride on the street. It is more upswept for turning clearences.

Sounds like you got some good ideas for your scoot.

This has been bothering me since you posted it...

That's an awfully nice Street Bike to "Cut Up" for Drag Racing...

Maybe another KZ Build is in your future. You know like a "Ground Up Build" of a "Nice Track Bike" you can run at your local Strip on Test & Tune night.

Build the bike to run into the 10's or so, and as your skills progress you "Tune" the bike faster.

If you are interested I have set aside a Frame, and some other parts for you.

Let me know Tim.

"Build it to run into the 10s?" In the 1/4?A 10 sec q mile Kawi is haulin arse and it would take some major wrench skills to 1.build a 10 sec bike, and 2.keep it together, plus some major seat time to make it run 10s consistently without hurting self or others.I dont think I would encourage folks to build and ride a 10 sec bike unless I knew a lot about their skill sets.Just my 2 cents.bj

there are two things that i had in my youth i often wish i could still access.....lack of fear....and lack of fear...

when i was 19 ,a friend and i would sit around .in a shop full of 70's leftover kz's and talk of making a ten second bike or a formula u.s.a big bore with everything stripped off it......and racing against the new generation of bikes just coming on the scene

We were so close and did not even know that by just being there with the bikes and the desire...the battle was near won...we had everything wee needed to go the next step...and did not...it will always bug me....now i know we were so close to getting on the tracks that we drove to weekends...

Age and commitmnets will grind the sharp edges off of a young mans dreams...but never his desires....those will haunt you for years if not wrenched out early...do it!!!

only problem is after your old ,that bravado is only a rumor or an act...

you can take a mostly stock gpz1100 and with some trianing and tunning and get ten second bike and even if it only goes twelve...who cares anyways....your doing it!!!

Do the things now while you still have fresh eyes and a young heart...they will be twice as fun as anyone should be allowed to have ....and it will never be a better time to try than now!!!

You can build one easier than any of us old farts and enjoy it twice as much cause it's all new!!!!

DO IT!!!!!!

I think if Tim wants to learn to Drag Race, it should be on a Bracket or a Strip Bike, at the Track where it's safe. Besides, Tim will have a license and seat time on his current bike before he is finished with the above mentioned project... If he accepts, and his Dad is ok with it.

And 10's is what your average 600cc Super Sport Bike can run right off the show room floor with Slight tweaking/proper set-up.

A 79-80 MKII with slight Nods, and proper set-up will run 11.4 12.00 all day...

Don't Be Scared BJ :)

id say start by building a chassis that can safely run into the 10s with a motor built to run consistantly in the 12s and work your way up the ladder from there in my experiance anyway.
everybody talks about the 600s running 10 sec 1/4s without breaking a sweat, but like ive said before at our little 1/8 mile track the above average guys on warmed over slammed and stretched busas are still running 6.6s-6.7s(somebody do the conversion there)
dont worry about what anybody else is running or how fast theyre running it,the only guy you need to beat on the last amber light is yourself! B)

Scared? Dont think so.8 years in 82nd Airborne Division took most of my scared.I probably was drag racing bikes when most people on this forum's parents were teen agers (that would be 1950s).My current KZ recently turned a sub-9 second 1/8th and it is pretty stock and I at age 72 was up.I am just saying that before I advised a young person to build and ride a 10 second 1/4 bike,he or she needs to learn a few things first-thats all.Dont be foolish -young or old.Oh and bye the bye,if Plummens post about Busas only runing 6.5 1/8ths, I think me and the Kawi did pretty damn well.Ride on,young dudes, ride on.bj

Plummen is right. Build a good chassis first. You can have all the HP in the world but if the chassis isn't up to the task, it will all go to waste. Chassis first. Watched a 1000R run 10.60's all day yesterday. No idea what he had in the motor but it had 34mm carbs, open Kerker header, and an air-shifter. It had a stock block so it can only be so big. Was told it had a stock exhaust cam and bigger(?) intake cam. Stock chassis. Rider was good at it too though. Rider skill is a major part in this by the way. Oh...6.7-6.8's convert to mid-10.4's to mid 10.6's.

1980 LTD (changed over the years), 1979 LTD (being rebuilt), 1977 KZ turbo and various KZ's in various states of build. KLX110
