The bike hasn't changed much if at all, I had to put it away in early September because I had to go off to school. I actually haven't even seen it since then as it's in a friends heated basement, but I will get to see it this weekend though!:woohoo:
If I remember I will try to get pics of it all tucked away for winter.

A few times last summer it would drop two cylinders, then they came back when I turned the kill switch off and back on. I haven't been able to really troubleshoot it since I can't get it to happen reliably, but I have a feeling that it's something with the dyna III since I put new coils and plug wires on last winter. I was considering just putting a dyna s on it, but I'd like to know if that's truly the problem before I throw parts at it.

Dyna III is just fine.531blackbanshee wrote: i have a new one (dyna III)that has never been installed.i was wondering what your take on it was. don't seem to see them much....
Am recalling they were discontinued upon being superseded by Dyna-S, and that Z1E listed Dyna III up until about a year ago when they were closed out.
If needed, installation instructions are available.
Good Fortune!

I was very lucky to pick up a 78 Z1R from a guy a few months ago for $450. Yes, $450. I know the guy, so he was just excited that I wanted to restore the bike as it was a project he had planned to do for the past 4 years but never seemed to get around to it (he spends most of his time on his car projects).
The bike is going to need a ton of work. Everything from a broken dash cover to aftermarket swingarm to aftermarket exhaust needs to be replaced with original. So, for the past few months I have been accumulating parts before I start. Lucky for me I found a guy just an hour away from me who has a ton of original Z1R parts that he took off when he converted his to a drag bike.
The bike was also missing side panels and windshield, both items I have managed to obtain.
Your thread has definitely compelled me to really do a complete restoration. I'll be starting next week (only thing I got around to doing so far was rebuilding the carbs) but I think to start by stripping the bike down and starting at the frame, as you did, is the best way to go.
Again, thanks for sharing!!!
