When i bought the rolling chassis,the seller told me that he changed the piston rings because the motor burned oil. Some kilometers after changing the bike burned more oil than before. Here is the reason.
No problem, i took a used zylinder with pistons from a crashed MK2 with only 8500 km on the clock out of my storage rack.
I changed the worn cam chain parts,the sprockets and the top idler assy were in good shape,probably they were changed before.
When i removed the old hardened carb holders, the next surprise.
Ok also no problem, another grab in the storage rack for a good head.
Checked out the valve guides,grinding in the valve seats,and changed the valve oil scraper rings.
Ok, head on the zylinder, valves adjusted,new head bolds. ready
The old alternator was ok, but he don't looks trustable. So i took an better one, complete with cover
The carbs are ultrasonic cleaned.New float valves and seats,new jets.
Cleaned the airbox and mounted new air cleaner ducts
At the weekend i get the new tyres, Avon Roadrider
But i'm irresolute about the wheels.
I have 3 sets. LH is the original set. In the middle is a set of lester wheels and on the right side is a Melber wheel set.

PS- I'm only about a 3 hour ride from a huge motorcycle grave yard in Pennsylvania, USA. They had tons of z1R and other vintage parts just ready for the taking, should you need anything.

the bike looks as though you are doing a resto and in keeping with that i think you should keep the stock wheels.any of those mags will look good and it is your bike,so show us the pics when you decide.

I removed the oil pan to clean it,and also the strainer of the oil pump.
The Motor is complete and ready to rum.
Now I’m going to complete the brakes.
The front callipers are totally rebuild sand blasted,and got a paint job.
Inside they got a complete new seal kit
New calliper screws and stainless steel brake lines.
The brake discs are looking very dirty, so I cleaned them and gave them a paint job
The rear master cylinder got a cleaning and a rebuild kit.
If you want to register a vehicle in Germany you have to go to the TÃœV. They check that the bike is in good shape and brakes, lights, tyres, all that stuff is ok, and the bike is in original condition.
So for the first I have to take the original wheels with new Avon tyres. If I have the registration I change to the Lester wheels.
Completed the chain sprocket cover ,and also a new points cover

Good looking bike,i love the extended swing arms.
The D2 was maron, and there were only approx 300 sold in the USA
Does anyone have photos of the arrangement of the electrical equipment under the side covers? For a D3 or D2?

Love your project!!! Great work you are doing!
The Z1R II was never sold in the U.S. It was however, sold in Canada, and I believe they were all maroon. Towards the end of 1978 Kawasaki made a very quiet deal with The Turbo Cycle Corporation to install ATP (American Turbo Pack) turbos and then re-distributed to bikes to selected dealers as a 'factory' turbo (market years were late '78 and then the majority were 1979s). In 1979 true factory Kawasaki 1000s in the US were the A3, the B3 (LTD), and the E1. In the US we only had the Z1R in '78 and then again in '80.
If you have information stating that 300 Z1Rs were sold in 1979 in the States, they were likely the Turbo Z1Rs.
More importantly: LOVE YOUR WORK!
Question: allegedly in Germany you guys got your choice of three fuel tank sizes on the Z1Rs. I'd LOVE to get one of the large units. If you ever find one I would be very interested in how much I might have to part with to get it over here! :woohoo:
