the whole reason I'm here is cuz I picked up a 78 B model to restore.
So the previous owner said it needed a coil, the left coil was not functioning so I replaced that and got it running today!:woohoo: the low end circuits in the carbs are all gummied up so it wont run any longer than my prime shots. It sounds good with the kerker.
so once the carbs are cleaned up, and I can drive it around the block and make sure the trans works ok, then I will tear it down for the repaint/rechrome, etc. The bodywork will keep the existing metallic black. I am going to paint the engine black .

Best of success.

The coil was 49, and the starter clutch was 30. I will put the start clutch in when I pull the motor for the cleanup and paint.
The odometer shows 38k miles, but the engine case lines show orange RTV all the way around, so someone has gone through the engine. I'll listen for noises, maybe do a compression test.

Looks like you'll have a fine ride considering the outlay. I've always been fond the 650's.
I'd keep the engine shiny as well, especially on a black bike.

these days, if a craigslist RD400 comes up you have to call in the first hour, or its GONE! Same with H2s
I might paint the lower cases gloss imron, then leave the cylinders and head natural finish
