1979 KZ 750 Sat for 10 yrs was created by arjay2008
I'm lookin at getting a '79 750 w/ 22k for $400, but it has been sitting in a garage for 10 years. This would be my first bike and I'd use it as a project for over the winter. What kind of work would i be looking at doing and about what would I be paying, assuming that it was running fine when it was stored? Would it be worth it?

Thanks

Yes it would be worth it, these old kawi's are extremally tough. Are you a good wrench? With setting for 10 years, your looking at, rebuilding the carbs, new tires, drain the gas tank, oil, new spark plugs, change the break fluid. All the basic things with something has has been asleep for 10 years. Is the motor free?, or is it locked up?

I'm actually pretty new at all of this, but it's been something I've wanted to get into for a while. The motor is free and the guy just wants it out of his garage.

Go for it, my 650 had been sitting for about that long, and with those things oldkaws said she shot to life. It'll be worth it, believe me.

I agree! These old Kaws are tough. If it was running when put away it will be fine with a good thorough carb cleaning. How about cosmetically? If it's in good shape it will be a goo first project for you!

Definately go for it! If you have just a little mechanical ability and the wiring hasnt been chewed by mice, and everything seems ok go for it!

My bike sat 7 years in a garage when I got it. I put some fresh gas in, put a little oil in the cylinders through the spark plug holes (just in case it was real dry and to make sure it would move freely) I changed the oil, replaced the battery, and the damn thing cranked and cranked and fired up! These bikes are touuuuugh! It ran well too!

I say go for it, also. You will never know what you are dealing with until you get in there. But if you can take it slowly, and methodically, there isn't anything you can't figure out, especially with the wealth of information you can get from this site and it's members.

Enjoy!!

PS Take pictures. Lots of pictures, even if you don't think you need them. Besides, we like to see 'em.:cheer:
