After putting it off for the last 3 months I finally made the drive to New York yesterday to collect the 650 I bought off ebay in December. Driving 860 miles in one day really kicks your butt. I made it home about 2:30 this morning. As luck would have it the weather has turned to crap again, when I left yesterday morning it was raining but fairly warm, by the time I got home we had snow again. Since it is only 32 deg with a wind chill of 24 I probably won't get much done on it today.

From the little bit I've been able to look over it's gonna need the following. The charging system has been looted, the rotor is missing and the stator is pooched from rust. I knew this when I bought it and I have a good charging system here from a 750 LTD that I should be able to make work. I also have an NOS dyno cover laying around here that I'll probably use as well.

The slides in the carbs are stuck but when it was laid up the dealer had just finished doing a cleanup on the carbs so I'm hoping to get lucky and maybe I can free up the slides with the carbs still on the bike. I've gotten lucky before when I bought my 650 CSR and was able to get the slides unstuck.

I'll need to do something about the exhaust, it has some aftermarket mufflers on it now that have had the baffles removed. I've got the stock peashooter exhaust from my 77 650 C-1 sitting here as well as a couple of headers I'll just have to decide what I want to do with this. The fork ears are pretty rusty but I have a set I just took off my C-1 that are passable as is or I might look into getting the chrome redone. There is also some light rust on the bars and the fenders but they look like they will cleanup well.

That's about it for the bad now for the good. It came with an factory key and all the locks seem to match. The paint is in pretty good condition, it looks to have some fade but it is acceptable as is so I can't see myself spending the money to repaint it. The LTD seat is like brand new and while I was there I bought another one just like it for $40.00 woohoo:woohoo: It only shows 6000 miles on the bike and judging from the lack of wear on things like the chain and sprockets, footpegs, cables etc I'm inclined to believe it to be correct. The engine turns over freely and seems to have good compression. There doesn't seem to be any oil leaking from the front forks. I hooked a jump battery to it and the electrics seem to be in pretty good order. The engine covers have what I would say is pretty light oxidation and look like they will cleanup pretty easily. I've got a newer set of 500 Vulcan shocks laying around here I'm planning to use to lower it down so I won't have to bother cleaning the stockers. The brakes aren't locked up so I'll probably just inspect them and change out the front brake fluid.

I'll continue to update this as I go along and hopefully I'll have some more pics as I progress.

One at a time :P  They do require insurance here but I have a "named driver policy" which covers me for liability on anything I drive.

The reason for the ¡Usted no necesita otra motocicleta! line under my ID is because my wife is from Colombia and if immigration ever gets around to issuing her visa I'm sure that will soon become the most commonly heard phrase around my house.

Unfortunately it remains cold here and Friday night it snowed so my progress has been limited. I have managed to remove the ugly crashbar which is destined for the trash heap and the luggage rack that is in pretty nice shape. I'm gonna sell the rack so if anyone here needs it shoot me a PM.

I pulled the tank and drained all the old gas which surprisingly did not look all that bad. I also pulled the petcock and that looks new even the screen is clean. I also took the tops to the carbs off and squirted some Marvel mystery oil down each carb bore to try and get the slides to unstick, so far no luck. My next step is going to be to unbolt each slide from the bellcrank shaft and then I can try to free them up one by one. If that doesn't work I'll breakout the propane torch and try heating them. I did put some gas into my test tank and filled each bowl with some fresh gas, it looks like I have a sticking float on #2. More and more it is looking like the carbs may have to come off but if I do pull them it is going to require new air cleaner hoses which I'd rather not have to buy until after I get this thing up and running.

When I pulled the tank I was amazed at how clean everything is underneath, I also pulled the aircleaner element out to check it and the same thing, really clean. Yesterday I got a little bored and antsy so I decided to pull the point cover off and see what I'm up against when it comes to making the engine covers shine. The cover cleaned up like new with a few minutes work on the buffing wheel and a little bit of Mother's polish on a paper towel. Normally when I polish covers I wetsand them first but this one cleaned up great with buffing only.

Everything in the area under the points cover looks brand new. The more I look at this bike the more I'm convinced that 6026 is the true mileage.:) :) :) I still need to get it off the back of the truck and give it a good blasting with the pressure washer but I don't want ice forming on everything so that will have to wait a few days.

I did go look at an 81 CSR 1000 yesterday that was listed on Craigslist for $500.00 with a clean title and in a move that is totally out of character for me, I passed it up. It only had 14,000 miles on it but was rough looking. I suppose if I were a dragracer it would be a dream find but since I'm into rehabbing them it was a nightmare.

Sounds like you found a good deal, but I'd be really hesitant to use a propane torch or other heat source near the carbs. Not only because they might catch fire, but the rubber bits could be ruined by the heat. Ed

Yeah Ed I'll have to be cautious with the torch but I've done this before when all else fails and it usually works well. The area of the carbs that you need to heat up to free them really doesn't have any rubber bits to worry about and it doesn't usually take all that much heat to get them to unstick.

Dale that's the problem the collection needs to shrink. My problem is #1 I can't seem to concentrate on one long enough to get everything on that one done before I start with another. #2 after putting so much work into them I want to keep them around awhile and play with them. #3 I think I might just be a greedy bass turd suffering from a type of hoarding mental illness that isn't helped by having ebay available 24/7.:S

Edit: This pic is after some very light cleanup I still have not powerwashed it yet.
