Patience will get you the book on eBay. That version regularly pops up...expect to pay up to US$40.00 for the manual although it usually can be had for considerably less. As for the special tools, there are cheaper versions around than what I posted. I have both those tools; the K&L valve spring compressor is essentially a modified 'C' clamp so if you compression tool is equivalent, it might work. If not, there have been plans posted on this site to make your own and I know that other companies have made versions that are less expensive than the K&L tool. There is also an alternative valve shim tool available that members claim will work instead of the OEM Kawasaki tool...and is about 1/5th the price:) . And no, you shouldn't be scared...take your time, ask questions (whatever you run into on the bike, someone else on this site has already encountered it!), read the manual...KHI manuals are very detailed w/photos (albeit a bit odd).

If I take the head off to do the valve seals and such, is it necessary for me to mill the head before I re-install it? What other things are involved in the process. I am still in search of the service manual.

Thanks for the heads up on the manual. I will probably be winning that auction, fingers crossed. Watching for now, bidding at the end.

What about milling the head and such? Heard it from a guy at work and it caught me off guard. never heard of it before.

Ignore the guy from work...unless you have a warped head (the bike, not you) or adapting another head to boost or lower compression...it is unnecessary. All other procedures are detailed in the shop manual.:)

Well, won the shop manual on eBay. Thanks for the heads up McDroid. I worked on the bike a bit, just taking off body parts here and there to see what I am dealing with. Nothing too intimidating just yet. I pulled all the plugs and then were all solid black. Also, the 1st cylinder (far left if sitting on the bike) was a little oil soaked. I think that could be the valve you guys diagnosed earlier. Hopefully I can get the tools necessary and get started. Also, I will try to get some more pics for you guys.
