Ok, I got the rear brake caliper off with out taking the wheel off, wasnt that bad, dont think I can get it back together that way. the book I bought is for the kz1000, so the brake set up looks differant than LTD, what is the correct way to reassemble after I rebuild the caliper??

I ran into the same issue w/mine (it didn't disassemble anything like the manual said mine said the pads should have pulled from the top of the caliper and they couldn't because the caliper housing was a solid unit) and had to take it too the shop because I didn't have anyway to remove the rear wheel.
They had to remove the rear wheel and use air pressure to remove the pads and then reassemble on the bench then place it on the bike then replace the wheel.
They said it had to do w/where the bike was manufactured. Since it didn't cost that much ($40 bucks, but they said it would cost more the next time  but I got a jack now and I'll struggle w/it myself next time). You might give Jeff @ Z1 a call and ask him about this issue.

Here's the page from the LTD Manual that shows removal of the caliper. It says that dis-assembly/repair of the caliper is the same as the front, which is in the KZ Shop Manual.
Hope this helps.

Here's the brake caliper breakdown for the KZ900. It's for the front brake, but it should be the same as the rear.

the one I have is a one piece unit, not too bad to rebuild I hope, going to take it apart tonight from the looks os the fluid that came out of it I may need to get into the master cyl.
Think while I am doing this then I am going to change it over to dot 5

still not real clear on how to reasemble the caliper to the bracket and get the pads in, may take a cold one or two to figure it out

Just like BSK stated and I alluded too, it's a single unit.
