I'm finding gear oil on my wheel and on the floor and under the bevel drive, especially after riding. I assume its the large round oil seal. the service manual says to heat the drive in an oil bath to 130 C to remove the old seal. I've never heard of that before. Clymer says take it to a dealer.

Can anyone tell me about this oil bath, and why won't boiling water work? Have any of you replaced this seal yourself?

You are going to find it just a tad difficult to get water to 130 C unless you use a pressure cooker.

Water boils at 100 C.

yeah, but.. yeah but... its a little easier to heat, and it will still provide some expansion.. Nevermind.. what kind of oil?? and how do I hold a large, extremely hot cast aluminum bevel drive unit? It's just my natural reaction to ask, "no, really, I really gotta HEAT it? Can I get away with maybe, NOT heating it? cos that would be so much.. EASIER!"

anyone? ferris? maybe I should buy a used one with a non-leaking oil seal installed if its all that rare..

If it was me, I might try a gallon of cooking oil in a big pot on the kitchen stove, or borrow my brothers deep fried turkey cooking setup

Easy way to do it would be to take it to a machine shop, since heating metals to a particular temp is part of annealing/hardening/tempering and is commonly done.

I think that sticking it in the oven might not be a good idea, considering the oil/grease that will still be in it. That would probably even get me in trouble
