So I have bought a 1983 KZ250 Ltd Basket case with a view to turning it in to a Scrambler/Brat type but unfortunately the magneto (rotor) has lost some of its magnets ( which I understand is a fairly common problem !!)
im hoping one of you learned people can help me out - I’m in the UK
My questions being :
1: Are magnet kits available ? I’ve had a look but can’t find anything to suit
2: Do I wait until I find a complete one on eBay etc , they seem as rare as chickens teeth
3: is it feasible to fit another/later engine (I’m happy to do a bit of fabrication )
4: Are there other ones from different engInes that will fit
5: Do I bin the project , sell the bike for spares and find something else

Many thanks in advance

1. Never seen or heard of such.
2. A good, though frustrating choice.
3. Not easily, but doable if your skills and tool chest are up to it.
4. Evidently not. The fitment chart at Partzilla shows the rotor as used on the 250 only. However, that engine was also used on several atvs of that era. You could broaden your eBay search to include them.
5. That would be sad. You may be able to find a parts bike cheaply, or you may find a complete 250 engine for parts or to swap for the present one. Replacing the engine with a 305 may not entail a great deal of fabrication, but if you wanted to get crazy, I bet a 550 could be forced to fit, but you would need to upgrade the brakes quite a bit. The domino effect of mods could quickly get out of hand and completely drain your bank account.

Hmmm. I wonder if a water cooled 250 Ninja engine could be fitted? Surely just a little duct tape and hot glue……

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI love it when a seller provides plenty of pictures and places the part next to a ruler.
Fixing up these older bikes, you sometimes need to be resourceful. When searching for the correct  P/N fails. I start looking at parts pics from other bikes of the same manufacture within a few years.
Some times a tab or mounting hole is different, which gives the part a different P/N's. But with no or minimal modification they fit and function fine.
I sometimes get burned, and the part doesn't work out. I'd say I'm batting around 750.
Here's a listing for a rotor off a kz305. Compare to what you have. If everything looks right, it my be worth a try.

Thanks for the replies

I have looked at transplanting the 250 Ninja or 305 engines as both seem readily available at a reasonable cost
a friend put me on to these people who may be of interest to anyone in a similar position as they specialise in rotors/CDI’s etc

I’ll keep you posted on my progress

All the best
