I went through and put a light coat of dielectric grease on every single bulb and connection on my bike today, including around all the fuses. They didn't need it, as they were all spotless and shiney clean, but I figured it would be good preventative maintenance. While I was nosing around under the left side cover, I decided to pull out the little black thing (see first pic) and see what it was. Oh, look, more fuses. I noticed a questionably taped (with 1.25" wide Blue electrical tape) splice joining the red wire with white stripe and plain white wire that came out of one end, so I untaped it, and its crimped together with what looks to be the crimpable part of some connector, with the rest of it cut off. The Fuses looked kinda strange to me too, the actual filament that is. Before I solder and shrink wrap the splice, I wanted to know what this thing is.

The wire on the right side (the one I'm trying to hold against the box with my left ring finger) is white with a black stripe and a double connector on the end, and was disconnected with nothing else to connect it to. Its directly opposite (connected through the fuse) the red wire with white stripe.

The white wire with blue stripe was connected to somthing that was NOT hot while the ignition was OFF, while the Red wite with white stripe is connected to a white wire with red stripe that IS hot while the ignition is OFF.

If I'm not mistaken that is the fuse for the flux capacitor induction system. Standard equipment on a Deloren and a few Kawasaki's. If you find a clock and some orange hiway flare looking things back away slowly.

Never had a second fuse box on my KZ's. Any aftermarket stuff? Back up lighting system? What size fuses are they?

looks like 10 or 15 amp fuses, no aftermarket lights or any changes to the wiring harness, nothing connected to the battery that I didn't put there. The box is mounted in a factory..uh..thing, similar to what holds the flashers to the battery box.

Mine has a similar external fuse. But what the previosu owner did, was he removed the main fuse from the 3 in the fuse box and just ran an in-line fuse (same as the one you have) outside the fusebox. If I had a pic I'd show you, but your's is pretty close. I have no idea why other than that maybe the previosu owner was just getting bad connections or a connection failure with the one in the box and tied this one in instead. At least thats the reasoning for how it is on mine.

Every fuse connection in the main box is hot and wired as its supposed to be, all connections are clean, all fuses good. This has to be some kind of factory piece, as it was mounted on one of those rubber sleeves similar to what holds the flashers, but its a perfect fit for this little box, and even has a hole for a spare fuse. I'll disconnect it and see if the bike starts and runs.
