in keeping with the KZ corollary to murphy's law, everything I try to do to my bike winds up taking twice as long as I had planned and being three times as expensive.

This weekend, we tried pulling off the the rotor on my '82 CSR, and wound up breaking a couple pullers, and bending up the rotor. Still didn't get it off.

Now I'll be needing another permanent magnet rotor.

Also an internal, bolt-type puller.

My question is this: will any old bolt work, or will I need to get a hardened steel specialized flywheel puller type?

I really want to avoid the hell that is a broken bolt stuck in my engine.

I have been looking for the proper size bolt. A lot of sites sell a 18mm x 1.5-R.H.-Internal, Male flywheel puller bolt for this, however, this seems a bit too big. can anyone verify if this is the proper size?


(BTW - anyone want to sell a J-model magneto rotor or the puller bolt? U2U if so.)

Generally either the rear axle or the steering head bolt works.

How are you trying to get it off, and is it a taper fit or is it keyed? If it is keyed you should be able to see a slot in the crank and/or rotor. If it is a taper fit, screw a bolt in as tight as you can possibly get it and then give the head of the bolt a good smack with the hammer.

ok... got a new rotor and starter clutch... I'll be out of the country for a couple weeks for work, but when I'm back we'll be trying to extract that old rotor and get the beast back on the road

removing a rotor is an art. especially if the bike has been overheated at one time in it's life.
a bolt works fine, but it's how you do it
use metal anti seize gook on the threads
SHOCK will divide the metals on the taper friction fit
if you use a "air" impact driver dont wash out the threads. tension it up pretty good and smack the bolt with a 48oz ball peen hammer or the like but not a framing hammer they bounce . take the tension off re grease the threads and repeat.
its the shock that does the trick, not the pulling pressure of the threads.
